Marriott Has A New Free Night Offer For New Members

Marriott Rewards is one of the few hotel loyalty programs that occasionally offers bonuses for new members who join and complete qualifying activity. In April I wrote about how they had an offer for a free night after making two stays, and it looks like this promotion has been renewed, as there’s now a new booking window for the offer.

New Marriott Rewards members can earn a free night certificate after making two stays between July 9 and November 28, 2018. Stays at all participating Marriott Rewards properties count towards this promotion, and the free night certificate will be valid at Category 1-5 hotels.

The free night certificate will be deposited in the Marriott Rewards account after successful completion of the second stay, and will be valid for one year from the date of issue.

Let me once again emphasize that this promotion is only for new members, and only those who sign up through this link. If you’re an existing member I wouldn’t recommend signing up for a new account, as there’s a good chance they’ll catch you and cancel both of your accounts. However, if you have a family member or friend who doesn’t have a Marriott Rewards account, this could make a lot of sense for them.

As of August Marriott will be forming a single loyalty program. We don’t know exactly which date in August the program will launch, though until then only stays at Marriott Rewards properties will qualify. As of that point, stays at Starwood hotels would qualify as well, since they’ll all be considered the same for the purposes of the loyalty program.

The free night certificate offered with this promotion is valid at Marriott Rewards properties, though since a single program is being formed, it should also be redeemable at Starwood hotels as of August. I would expect that a Category 1-5 certificate will be valid at a hotel retailing for up 35,000 points per night, though that’s just speculation on my part, and I could be wrong.

Anyway, I consider this to be an excellent promotion for those who aren’t Marriott Rewards members, but have plans to stay at some of their hotels this fall. This promotion should also be stackable with whatever global promotion Marriott is offering at a given point. Marriott has a global promotion valid through July 20, 2018, though I imagine they’ll offer another one in the fall.

Does anyone plan on taking advantage of this Marriott Rewards promotion for new members (or took advantage of an offer like this in the past)?

(Tip of the hat to Pam)

  1. Does anybody know how long it usually takes for the certificate to get issued? Not a Marriott member, but was planning on staying two nights at the Courtyard in Lima (thanks to a very good deal), go hiking for 10 days and on the way back stay one night there again. Could help to save quite a bit as that third night is pretty expensive (200€+)

  2. @Sharee, Lucky included a link to Marriott’s website for the offer, which has a link to the Offer Terms & Conditions. If you clink that link and read the first three bullet points, you’ll have an answer to your question.

  3. Cash is king.

BTW: Unless you open your account and then transfer points to Marriott, it is unlikely that a new joiner would have sufficient points to make a points redemption 😉

  4. @Nate Nate, lol. It’s actually even more basic than that. If someone actually read the *post,* they’d know it was for new members only. Lucky even emphasizes this point! 😉 Really, there’s no good reason for a question asking whether a point stay qualifies… :-p

  5. Lucky, do you know if the stays must be booked on Marriott.com for them to count under the promotion? The T&C don’t mention this anywhere but want to confirm. I was going to book through the Chase portal, but don’t want to do so if it won’t count for the promotion.

  6. @ Sam — It has to be an “eligible” paid stay, so does have to be booked through a Marriott channel. Booking through the Chase portal is unlikely to count.

  7. Lucky, do you know if 2 nights back to back will be qualified as 2 separate stays if I make two separate reservations?

  8. @ vinka — Nope, they’re savvier than that (though if you switch hotels from one night to the next then they’d qualify).

  9. Is there an age limit to become a member? Can I sign up my 18mo old
Son and book in his name, with me as a guest.

  10. This looks like “old Cat 1-5” which would equate to Cat 1-4 in the new programme. Therefore up to 25,000 pts and not 35,000 as stated, right?

  11. Can you pay with your credit card at the hotel if you stay with the member or do they expect payment with the member’s credit card?

  12. Hi,
I am an spg member but not yet a Marriott member. Do you think it is a good idea for me to use this promo or would you consider me as existing member (due to spg membership)?

    Best Regards,
    Daniel
