Historically one of the best uses of Air France-KLM Flying Blue miles is booking their Promo Awards. Flying Blue publishes these every month, and they offer 20-50% off select award tickets on Air France and KLM metal.

Last month some major changes were made to the Air France-KLM Flying Blue program. It became a revenue based frequent flyer program, meaning that you’re awarded miles based on how much your ticket costs, rather than based on the distance you fly.

Furthermore, Flying Blue introduced variable award pricing. Previously Flying Blue redemption rates were zone based, while now the pricing works differently. In other words, a New York to Paris redemption now costs a different number of points than a New York to Paris to Frankfurt redemption, even though they previously priced the same.

However, Flying Blue continues to offer Promo Awards, they just work a bit differently. Flying Blue has just published their Promo Awards for bookings through July 31, 2018, for travel between September 1 and October 31, 2018. For transatlantic travel, the following destinations are available for 50% off:

  • Washington Dulles on Air France and KLM in economy
  • Houston on Air France and KLM in economy
  • Montreal on Air France in premium economy

Factoring in these discounts, you’re looking at potentially paying just 12,250 miles for an economy award between Washington Dulles and Amsterdam.

Or 14,500 miles for an economy award between Houston and Paris.

Both of those are incredible deals. While there are some carrier imposed surcharges, they’re mild, and you’ll pay just ~$68 for a one-way award ticket from the US to Europe.

Then for 22,250 miles you can fly from Montreal to Paris in premium economy, which is also quite a good deal. The surcharges there are a bit higher, and you can expect to pay ~$170 one-way.

If you’re connecting beyond Paris or Amsterdam, you can expect the pricing to vary with these Promo Awards. As I mentioned, Flying Blue now has variable pricing, and sometimes the pricing isn’t that logical. So while I doubt you’ll find flights with connections that are cheaper, the cost could vary significantly based on where you’re connecting to.

  1. SGN in J is discounted. The lowest I was able to find for IAH to SGN was 88,000 in J. That’s not bad.

  2. Is it in either direction or only from the US to Europe? And is it any destination in Europe? Thanks.

OOPS… WE’RE UNABLE TO ENROL YOU IN FLYING BLUE
Sorry, due to a technical issue we’re unable to register you now. Please try again later.

After going through about 10 pages.

  4. Hey Lucky, what are the change/cancellation fees on promo awards? Is it completely non-refundable or do they charge $70 to cancel/change?

  5. Found a Promo Award flight from FCO to IAD on October 5 last night (~11K), but was tired and decided to sleep on it… and now it is gone 🙁 “Do not steal in a slow motion” applies here!
