Amex Offer: 10K Bonus Points For Spending $600+ On AmexTravel.com

In the interest of full disclosure, One Mile At A Time earns a referral bonus for anyone that’s approved through some of the below links. For those of you not familiar with Amex Offers, it’s a program available through most Amex cards, where different cards are eligible for different savings and bonus offers. In many cases the offers can be huge, and more than offset the annual fee on a card.

To view Amex Offers, go to the bottom of the account summary page of any American Express card, where you’ll see all the offers you’re eligible for. These offers come in different forms, including discounts and even in some cases bonus points.

At the moment there’s a targeted Amex Offer for 10,000 bonus Membership Rewards points when you make a single purchase of $600+ for a prepaid hotel booking through amextravel.com by July 15, 2018. This is similar to an offer we saw late last year.

Do keep in mind that this promotion is targeted, though it at least seems to be pretty widely targeted. For example, in my case I see the offer on The Platinum Card® from American ExpressThe Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN, and more.

The thing that makes this deal even more valuable is that both The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN offer 5x points for hotels booked through amextravel.com. In other words, if you take advantage of this offer and spend exactly $600 using one of those cards, you’d earn 13,000 Membership Rewards points. I value those at ~1.7 cents each, meaning that you’re getting $221 worth of points on your $600 worth of spend. That’s a return of about 37%, which is excellent.

The big catch when making hotel bookings through amextravel.com is that you typically won’t earn points with your preferred hotel loyalty program, since this qualifies as a third party booking. Furthermore, bookings through Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts don’t qualify for this promotion, since those rates are booked through a different website.

For many there will be an opportunity cost to taking advantage of this promotion. However, for those who aren’t super hotel loyal, it could make sense to forego hotel points in order to earn $220+ worth of rewards on $600 of hotel spend. Furthermore, this is a great promotion if you’re staying at an independent hotel that isn’t otherwise eligible for points accrual.

Does anyone plan on taking advantage of this Amex Offer for amextravel.com?

  1. Would this work when booking a hotel through Amex travel using points for $600+, since the charge technically posts and is then credited?

  2. Wait…its only for prepaid bookings so FHR will not count as my booking isn’t prepaid. That is a bummer.

  3. Thanks Lucky. Just changed reservation originally booked on SPG site to this. I’ll take 10K points and free breakfast any day.

  4. Does the $600 have to be made in a single transaction, or could you make multiple transactions that add up to $600 to activate the bonus?

  5. +1 on Robin’s question above. Was just about to book a hotel stay with MR points and wondering if that would trigger the 10k bonus or not.

  6. I was targeted and just looked at the T&C’s. The only part I saw that potentially applied to a booking made with points is this (since there would be a corresponding credit for the charge when the points are applied):

We may not credit additional points to, or we may take away additional points that have been credited to, your program account if the qualifying purchase is returned/cancelled.

So still not 100% sure but thinking there is a good chance they may not give the 10k bonus in the points redemtion scenario.

  7. Does anyone know if the required $600 includes taxes and fees or only for base rate room charges? Thanks!

  8. I received this offer and would also like to know if it includes taxes and fees (which I would guess it would, as it says to make a single purchase) and what affect this would have on status benefits during the stay. If I could still get status benefits (as I really need a larger room for one night of a multiple night stay, which I think would be honored if was able to receive status benefits) then I would be ready to use this. Otherwise I will need to find a new option.

    Anyone have more insight?
