IHG Possibly Offering One Of The Best Deals On Purchased Points Yet

In the interest of full disclosure, One Mile At A Time earns a referral bonus for anyone that’s approved through some of the below links. These are the best publicly available offers that we have found for each card. Please check out our advertiser policy for further details about the partners we work with. Thanks for your support!

IHG Rewards Club has just introduced their latest bonus on purchased points, valid through May 31, 2018. Through this offer, IHG Rewards Club is offering up to an 80% bonus on purchased points — you get a 40% bonus when you buy at least 5,000 points, and an 80% bonus when you buy at least 20,000 points in one transaction.

On the surface this bonus isn’t as good as we’ve seen in the past. For example, in March IHG had a flash sale where they were selling points with a 100% bonus. However, thanks to some new circumstances, it may be the best bonus we’ve ever seen on purchased IHG points.

There are a couple of interesting things here:

  • IHG has raised the limit on how many points you can purchase per calendar year from 60,000 to 100,000 (these totals are before factoring in any bonuses)
  • IHG has recently lowered the cost per purchased point — if you buy at least 26,000 points in one transaction, you pay just one cent per point pre-bonus

If you max out this promotion and purchase 100,000 points you’d end up paying $1,000 and would get a total of 180,000 IHG Rewards Club points. That’s just 0.56 cents per point.

The value potentially gets even better than that. Earlier this month, the new IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card was introduced. One of the benefits of the card is that it offers 20% off when you purchase IHG points and pay with your card. I don’t yet have this card, but presumably this means you’d get 20% off here (since there aren’t any exclusions in the terms regarding promotions), and would end up paying just $800 for 180,000 points, which is a cost of ~0.44 cents per point. Assuming that works, it’s by far the lowest cost we’ve seen per purchased point.

Can anyone who has this card confirm that they’re seeing the discount reflected when purchasing points?

It potentially gets even better than that. The IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card also offers a fourth night free on award redemptions, so for award stays booked in increments of four nights, that’s like 25% off. Put another way, it’s like acquiring points for ~0.33 cents each if you’re going to redeem in increments of four nights. This is starting to look really compelling.

Here are the full terms of the promotion:

Offer available for purchases made between 12:00 AM ET April 18, 2018, and 11:59 PM ET May 31, 2018, inclusive. This is an exclusive, non-transferable offer for the intended recipient only and may not be forwarded. Bonus points will be awarded upon completion of the transaction. Bonus points will be awarded to the recipient of the points purchase. Offer is subject to change. Offer cannot be combined with any other offer.

Price includes all applicable fees. Purchased points are not refundable and are applicable toward all IHG® Rewards Club awards. Members may purchase a maximum of 100,000 points per calendar year and receive as a gift a maximum of 100,000 points per calendar year. Please allow 72 hours for points to post and appear in the recipient’s account. All other IHG® Rewards Club Terms and Conditions apply.

Bottom line

On the surface this doesn’t seem like it would be the best bonus ever, though assuming the 20% discount on purchased points from the IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card works in conjunction with a promotion (which it should), you’re looking at a very low cost per purchased point. Add in the ability to get a fourth night free on award redemptions, and this could make a lot of sense.

Do you plan on buying IHG Rewards Club points with a 100% bonus?

  1. Ben, I have the “old” Chase IHG card. Did it automatically become the new “Premier” card? I haven’t received a new card in the mail. Thanks.

  2. One could stack the old IHG card with Intercontinental ambassador status for an additional 20% points refund. This would bring your costs down considerably.

  3. Hi Lucky,

I have the IHG Select Credit Card and was just approved for the new Premier card. Do you know what is going to happen to the old Select cards? It has (or had) a benefit — 10% rebate on points redeemed — that the new Premier card does not have, so in conjunction with its anniversary night, the $49 annual fee for the old card might be justified in addition to the $89 annual fee for the Premier card.

    Thanks!

  4. @zow—no, the IHG Rewards Club Select (old card) and the IHG Rewards Club Premier (new card) are two different products.

@Hunter—you can use any credit card to get the 80% bonus points in this special offer

  5. @Tommy Trash, thanks.
I guess I need to find out more about Ambassador status. Is that achievable only through stays or can I buy? If latter, do you think worth it? Thanks.

  6. @zow—the easiest way is to buy it. Upon your 1 year renewal, you’ll be offered an option that includes 10% back on all point stays.

  7. But most bloggers value IHG points at $.004 each right? So this seems like one of those “if there’s a particular stay you want and it’s a good deal on points” kind of things.

  8. @Lucky says: “IHG Possibly Offering One Of The Best Deals On Purchased Points Yet”

Better than what’s been offered on Daily Getaways?

Just applied for the new Chase IHG card through your above link and got a “We’ll let you know in 30 days” email.

  9. I have both the card, tried to buy 100,000 points. It shows $1000.
20% discount does not show up at the checkout page.

  10. @TommyTrash – I meant the 20% discount on points from the Premier card. Do you have to buy it with the Premier card to get a 20% discount?

    Sorry for being unclear.

  11. Can anyone please confirm the 4th night free is actually every 4th night free during a stay? If I book 8-night stay with points, will both the 4th and 8th night be free? I don’t have the new IHG premier card to test it, so appreciate if anyone already know the answer.

  12. @Hunter—yes, only the new IHG Premier and (cheaper) IHG Traveller cards will give you 20% off IHG points purchases. No discount with the old IHG Select card.

  13. @Lucky. Understand many subscribers are in the US but it would be nice if just once in a while you included some info for holders of non-US cards too. Do any if these discounts apply to UK card holders?

  14. Yep, I applied for the card using the referral link. Hoping to stack the 4th night free with the PointBreaks (not this time, next time) and get 4 nights for 15K points somewhere, shall we say, out of the way – lol.

  15. I’ve been scouring the internet and not a single damn person has confirmed that the 20% discount works on this type of promotion. Until there are data points on that, this post is worthless.

  16. @Steve I spoke to IHG and they said it takes 6-8 weeks for your IHG account to be linked to the new IHG Premier Card. Once they are linked, the 20% discount will be linked to your IHG account. The agent did not say whether the discount would stack with generally available promotions.
