Nowadays it’s rare to see airlines offer worthwhile promotions for flying, given that they seem to think they don’t need loyalty programs to fill planes. That’s why a promotion that Southwest has just launched is quite lucrative.
Southwest Airlines is offering double Rapid Rewards points for flights that are booked and flown between April 6 and June 13, 2018. There’s not a public landing page for this offer, but if you log into your Rapid Rewards account you should see the offer listed, with a link to register.
Here’s how the promotional offer reads:
Earn Double Rapid Rewards Points between April 6 and June 13, 2018.
You can earn double points on every flight you book through Southwest Airlines® and complete by June 13, 2018! Whether you’re traveling for business or for pleasure, you’ll get 12 bonus points per dollar spent on Business Select® Fares, 10 bonus points per dollar spent on Anytime Fares, and six bonus points per dollar spent on Wanna Get Away® Fares.
Simply register, book, and travel:
- Register for this promotion between April 6 and June 13, 2018.
- Book your flights between April 6 and June 13, 2018.
- Complete your flights between April 6 and June 13, 2018.
Your bonus points will automatically post to your account within four days of completing your entire ticket. Register for this promotion today and watch all of your flights earn double points!
The annoying restriction here is that you only earn bonus points if you booked on April 6 or later, which means previously booked tickets don’t qualify. While I understand that Southwest is trying to drum up incremental business here, in general it seems like a bad business practice to penalize those who book in advance.
Southwest Rapid Rewards ordinarily awards the following number of points for flights:
As you can see, they usually award 6-12x points per dollar spent, depending on the type of fare you book. Southwest Rapid Rewards points can be redeemed for ~1.4 cents each towards the cost of a ticket on Southwest, meaning that this promotion offers an incremental return of ~8-16% on Southwest spend, which is solid. Points earned through this promotion don’t qualify towards A-List, A-List Preferred, or Companion Pass.
If you do have any upcoming Southwest travel that you haven’t yet booked, be sure to register for this promotion.
