Shangri-La Golden Circle is more of a niche loyalty program, and not one I talk about much. That’s because they don’t have any useful transfer partners, and there aren’t that many ways to get outsized value from the program, in my opinion.
However, the program seems to be getting more competitive in some ways. As I wrote about earlier in the year, you can earn 100 points just for downloading the Shangri-La app and logging into your account through it. On top of that, Golden Circle members can earn double points for bookings made through the app, and triple points for bookings made through the app where mobile check-in or check-out is also used via the app. These promotions are valid through April 30, 2018, so you still have a bit of time to take advantage of them.
The program is now back with a fantastic sale that we’ve also seen in the past, which has the potential to be lucrative.
Specifically, you can receive 25-40% off award redemptions made by May 31, 2018, for stays through December 31, 2018. Specifically, you can receive:
- 25% off a standard room redemption
- 30% off a club room redemption
- 40% off an executive suite redemption
The promotion is valid at all Shangri-La, Kerry, Hotel Jen and Traders locations worldwide, excluding Shangri-La Vancouver. This is as “no strings attached” as promotions get. You’ll automatically see the discounted price when booking awards. I guess their ability to offer a promotion like this reflects that this is a significantly smaller loyalty program than the likes of Hilton Honors or Marriott Rewards, as we’d never see a promotion like this from them.
For reference, here are the normal redemption rates at Shangri-La properties, which range from 1,000 points per night at a Collection A property, to 20,000 points per night for a Collection G property:
Golden Circle members ordinarily earn one point per dollar spent on a stay, though with the current app promotion can earn 2-3 points per dollar spent. When you combine that with 25-40% off the above redemption rates, that’s a pretty lucrative return on Shangri-La spend. Again, the issue is their lack of properties and how tough it is to acquire their points.
Shangri-La does sell Golden Circle points, but the cost is $130 per 1,000 points, so you typically won’t come out ahead buying points, even when factoring in this promotion.
If you want to maximize your value on revenue Shangri-La stays, make sure you book through the Shangri-La Luxury Circle program, where you’ll receive room upgrades, complimentary breakfast, and hotel credits.
Does anyone plan on redeeming Shangri-La Golden Circle points during this 25-40% off promotion?
