One of the best uses of Air France/KLM FlyingBlue miles is booking their Promo Awards.
FlyingBlue publishes these every month, and they offer 20-50% off select award tickets on Air France and KLM metal.
Back in the day Promo Awards would consistently be for 50% off and would have a good number of options in business class, though unfortunately they’ve devalued the promotion somewhat since then, and the discounts are now pretty consistently for 25% off. That’s still good, just not as good.
FlyingBlue just published their latest Promo Awards, valid for bookings made between March 1 and March 31, 2018, and for travel between May 1 and June 30, 2018. Unfortunately this is a weak Promo Awards list, which doesn’t come as much of a surprise, given that May and June start to get into the spring and summer travel period, when there’s increased demand for transatlantic flights.
So this time around the only transatlantic Promo Award is for travel in KLM business class between Calgary and Europe.
With this discount you’ll be paying just 46,875 miles one-way in business class (rather than 62,500 miles). Air France and KLM do impose some carrier imposed surcharges, so a one-way business class ticket will come with about $250 in surcharges. On the plus side, on some dates the Calgary to Amsterdam route is operated by a 787, featuring KLM’s excellent reverse herringbone business class.
With any Promo Awards, you can include connections to other points in Europe (including Israel) from Amsterdam at no additional cost, though you can’t include domestic segments on Delta to position within North America.
All saver level space on KLM in the above market is eligible for the discounted costs, and these awards will be bookable directly on the FlyingBlue website starting tomorrow. As always, there are plenty of routes outside of North America eligible for Promo Awards as well, so be sure to take a look at the whole list.
Promo Awards are always worth checking out. The list for March isn’t very good, though that’s not surprising as we’re approaching the busy summer travel period. It’s also worth mentioning that the February Promo Awards list is still live for a few more hours, so this is your last chance to book one of those awards, before they’re pulled. That list included six transatlantic awards, two of which were in business class.
