Special LifeMiles Promo For OMAAT Readers: Buy Miles With A 140% Bonus

Last week, the LifeMiles program launched their latest bonus on purchased miles. Their publicly available promotion offers up to a 125% bonus when you buy miles.

I’m happy to share that LifeMiles is once again offering a special increased bonus on purchased LifeMiles for readers of OMAAT. At each of the levels, OMAAT readers will receive an additional 15% bonus, meaning you can earn up to a 140% bonus on purchased miles.

Here’s what the bonus chart looks like for OMAAT readers who register:

LifeMiles ordinarily sells miles for ~3.3 cents each, so if you max out the promotion and buy miles with a 140% bonus, you’re essentially paying just 1.375 cents per purchased mile, which is a fantastic value.

To take advantage of this offer you have to register on this page between February 19 and 27, 2018, and then have to buy miles between February 20 and February 28, 2018.

You have to wait 24 hours from the time you register until you buy miles through the offer to get the better bonus. You should see the better bonus reflected on the purchase page once you’re eligible.

I’d highly recommend registering now, and then you can always still decide if you want to take advantage of the promotion later.

As far as redeeming LifeMiles go, Avianca is in the Star Alliance, so check out the Star Alliance award chart for redemption rates. To give a few examples of one way premium cabin redemption rates (there are no fuel surcharges on any awards):

  • US to Europe in business class costs 63,000 miles
  • US to Europe in first class costs 87,000 miles
  • US to Southeast Asia in business class costs 78,000 miles
  • US to North Asia in first class costs 90,000 miles

With a specific use in mind, this promotion can be a great value, especially for first class travel on ANA or Asiana. ANA first class between the US and Japan for ~$1,250 one-way is a pretty darn good value, if you ask me.

Or business class between the US and Europe will run you ~$870, which is great as well.

Of course everyone has to crunch the numbers for themselves and decide whether this makes sense or not.

The one catch is that LifeMiles doesn’t always have access to all the same space that other Star Alliance programs do. So you’ll want to do an online search to make sure the type of redemption you’re looking at is eligible. For example, they often block awards in Lufthansa first class, Austrian business class, all Air China flights, etc.

Thanks to LifeMiles for offering this special bonus for OMAAT readers, and I hope lots of you are able to take advantage of it! This is an opportunity to book Star Alliance premium cabin tickets at a significant discount, assuming availability coincides with your travel plans.

Comments

  1. I used to think lifemiles was a great program, but the issues with visibility of award availability makes it borderline useless. In my experience they cannot see lufthansa, swiss, austrian, united, and south african space.

  2. Important point: miles expire after a year if you don’t have status, the credit card, or points earning activity.

  3. just booked a biz class ticket from NYC-TLV on Lufthansa with a short layover in Frankfurt (unfortunately euro biz on the second leg 🙁 ) mid April for 3 people with miles purchased from the last promotion

    Thanks again Lucky!

  4. @Beachfan – Not for miles purchased before 4/15/18. If you buy miles in this promo they expire after 24 months without LM defined account activity.

  5. I can’t find a single Lufthansa C seat from Germany to the US west coast over several months. Can they not see the inventory or does Lifemiles not have access to it?

  6. I still cannot see any SAS space on lifemiles.com.
I think until they fix their availibility issue, it’s way too sketchy to buy miles.

  7. I’m happy that OMAAT gets to offer readers this special. But just spent an hour reviewing Lifemiles website and NOTHING is available and it’s SO BUGGY. Swiss international won’t show up. SAS international won’t show up. Lufthansa first class won’t show up. It’s unbearably frustrating. United shows up sometimes, but not always. I’d rather pay extra miles on United for something I CAN RELY ON versus something that’s flat out broken.

  8. With LifeMiles, you can’t necessarily trust that the limited award inventory you see available online is in fact bookable. It’s not uncommon that you get through until the end of the booking process and you’re then unable to complete the booking.

There is a manual workaround, but it’s complicated and your mileage may vary. I wrote more about it here: http://www.seat31b.com/2018/01/adventures-with-lifemiles-south-african-airways-and-united-business-class/

  9. I must say…their website has gotten A LOT better for booking award flights compared to a few years ago, thank you Avianca!

  10. I registered for your promo and received the same confirmation message as shown above; however, when I actually try to purchase the miles, the bonus does not calculate correctly (i.e. purchase 200k miles to receive 450k vs. 480k). Any suggestions?

  11. Hey Lucky,
Looks like you need to update the redemption rates. For example, Japan to US(at least LAX) is only 72,000 miles in first class. You reference North Asia, which is actually Siberia, however I believe you are referencing Japan, Korea, etc.

  12. @Kara, try waiting 24 hours after registering through the OMAAT link. And in general, most of these comments are spot on about availability. Website looks and works well (compared to before), but availability is still crap compared to United.

  13. Two warnings:
    1) When an airline so frequently and inflatedly sells award miles, you have to wonder about their financial solvency. This reeks of hyperinflation on the part of the issuer, which is not a good sign.
    2) The always accompanying symptom is that the underlying goods are not available, which others above are pointing out. Can you actually book a desired award with them? Not clear.

I would hope that Lucky would investigate a bit deeper and give us the story when touting an offer like this (presumably where he has some financial interest).

  14. My offer was an extra 35% bonus. So through OMAAT will I get 150%.

My travel is mainly out of Asia and I have little problem sourcing J or F awards.

  15. The 150% promo is long dead.
This exclusive offer is valid for subscriptions from November 23rd to 26th and to buy from November 24th and 27th 2017.

  16. “The one catch is that LifeMiles doesn’t always have access to all the same space that other Star Alliance programs do.” Yup. And it doesn’t always snow in July in Honolulu; Lucky doesn’t always fly basic economy; and the Cleveland Browns don’t always win the Super Bowl.

Tried six months of ORD-MAD, not an obscure route, and there are exactly zero seats in economy at the published economy rate, and very few at any price.

  17. I just came back from IAD-NRT-DEL, DEL-NRT, and then NRT-JFK. ANA First on IAD-NRT and Business the rest of the way. We were the only two in first. Amazing food and service all around. ANA Suite Lounge in NRT Sat 4 is great. Booked tix 2 weeks before the trip. Finding availability was hard and when I tried to book, the website showed availability, but then didn’t allow me to check out. Wound up having to email customer service and call them. The tickets basically got stuck in my cart.

  18. Has anyone ever gotten this error while trying to purchase miles? Lifemiles says they have no record of my transaction?

“Dear member. We already have your information , we will process your request and will contact you with the result of your transaction.”

  19. Lucky -it’s worth mentioning this. I got burned on the Asiana fare….as the 90K availability in ‘first’ is NOT for the Asiana suites but rather biz class. It errors out when you try to complete purchase.
