United Is Offering Up To 1,500 Bonus Miles Through Their Shopping Portal

Online shopping portals can be a great way to pick up additional miles & points for purchases you’d make anyway. Just for following a specific link you can earn bonus points in addition to the ones you’d earn anyway for credit card spend.

At the moment the United MileagePlus shopping portal is offering members a tiered bonus for purchases through June 23, 2017. Specifically:

  • If you spend $150 you’ll earn 500 bonus miles
  • If you spend $350 you’ll earn 1,500 bonus miles

Keep in mind that this is in addition to whatever bonus the shopping portal retailers usually offer, which typically vary from 1-20x points per dollar spent.

Personally I value United MileagePlus miles at ~1.4 cents each, so to me that’s like an additional ~$21 return on a $350 purchase.

The above thresholds are based on cumulative spend, meaning you just need to spend that much over the course of the promotion; it can include multiple transactions with multiple retailers.

The bonus miles should post within 8-10 weeks of when you make the purchase.

Bottom line

The above bonuses are in addition to the points you usually earn through the shopping portal, so the earnings can add up very nicely. You’re not going to want to take advantage of this offer just to earn the miles, though I’d always encourage people to shift as much spend as possible to online shopping rather than in-store shopping, given these bonuses.

As I posted about a few days ago, keep in mind that American AAdvantage is also offering a mystery bonus through their shopping portal, so you can decide which promotion is more valuable for you.

  1. True. This avenue for earning potentially loads of points is definitely under-utilized or under-explored due to the general emphasis on earning points by getting new cards. You’ve the cards already, put them to good use!

I recently took advantage of “Shop Through Chase” for a $3K purchase I’d already decided to make. Searching through the list of participating retailers, I found one that offered 10% cash back or 10x UR points if I charged the purchase to the Chase Freedom Unlimited visa. With the CFU already awarding 1.5% cash back or 1.5x UR points, it means that I got 11.5x or, exactly, $3,080 * 11.5 = 35K UR points for this purchase — not too shabby considering that I would have made the purchase anyway, and, in the past, I would likely have gone to Herald Square (Macy’s) to make the purchase. Now, I just do it online and rake in significant numbers of points at the same time…

  2. Totally confused about the pic in this article since it’s not a J config UA flies (it’s of course superior)

  3. @ UA-NYC — Sorry for the confusion. That’s the EVA Air business class seat, and I tend to think redeeming United miles on EVA is a great deal.
