In early May I wrote about how Hyatt is offering up to a 30% bonus on purchased points, as long as you purchase at least 5,000 points in one transaction. This is an opportunity to buy Hyatt points for as little as ~1.85 cents each, which I’d say is a solid deal, but isn’t a price at which I’d stock up on Hyatt points without a specific purpose.

Hyatt lets you purchase up to 55,000 points per calendar year pre-bonus, meaning that if you maxed out the promotion you can purchase up to 71,500 points during the promotion period.

Hyatt’s bonus on purchased points expires at 11:59PM CT tonight, Tuesday, May 23, 2017, so this is your last chance to take advantage of the promotion if you were considering it. The reason I mention this again is because just today Hyatt announced a 10% discount on award redemptions for those with The Hyatt Credit Card. This promotion is valid for stays between June 1 and September 5, 2017, and includes free nights redemptions, points + cash redemptions, etc.

If you were considering Hyatt’s 30% bonus on purchased points to begin with, this is not only your last chance, but perhaps the 10% discount on redemptions this summer will change the math on whether or not this promotion makes sense for some people, especially those who need to top off their account for a redemption.

However, remember that you do need to have all the points in your Hyatt account upfront in order to take advantage of the 10% refund — you get 10% of the points back 6-8 weeks after eligible redemptions occur.

  1. Do we know whether this applies to redemptions for reservations (and therefore point withdrawals) made earlier, or only to points withdrawn after registration?

  2. @Rich — per the Ts & Cs for the offer: “Only points redeemed between 6/1/2017 and 9/5/2017 will be eligible for this promotion.” It’s worth considering cancelling the redemption then re-booking it on June 1st (although if it’s a tricky booking or an in-demand property, it’s probably not worth the risk).

  3. @Josh and @Rich – I called and confirmed with Hyatt – “stays booked prior to June 1st but completed during the promotion period qualify for this promotion”. No need to cancel and rebook. I have a points stay starting on May 30th and ending June 1st, but they said they’d have to research what would happen with that one and get back to me.
