As I first wrote about a week ago, Avianca’s LifeMiles program is offering a special bonus on purchased miles for readers of OMAAT. This bonus offers up to 15% more bonus miles than what LifeMiles is offering publicly. If you max out this promotion, this is potentially an opportunity to buy LifeMiles for ~1.375 cents each, which is an exceptional value.
Depending on which credit card you use to buy miles, it gets even better than that. The Platinum Card® from American Express offers 5x points on airfare, and anecdotally buying LifeMiles qualifies as airfare for the purposes of the card. I value those points at ~1.7 cents each, meaning you’re getting a return on spend of ~8.5%. If you’re going to instead view that value as a discount, that means you’re really paying ~1.25 cents per mile.
If you’re even considering taking advantage of this offer, today (Monday, February 27, 2017) is the last day to register. To register for the promotion, visit this page and enter your LifeMiles number.
After registering you’ll have to wait 24 hours before you’ll be able to buy miles with the increased bonus. After 24 hours you should see the additional bonus reflected when you go to the purchase miles page (make sure you don’t buy the miles until the bonus is reflected on the purchase page).
As a reminder, here are some examples of LifeMiles one-way premium cabin redemption rates:
- U.S. to Europe in business class costs 63,000 miles
- U.S. to Europe in first class costs 87,000 miles
- U.S. to Southeast Asia in business class costs 78,000 miles
- U.S. to North Asia in first class costs 90,000 miles

At 1.375 cents per mile (or closer to 1.25 cents per mile, depending on how you look at it), it’s tough to go wrong, in my opinion. Personally I’ve burned through almost all of my LifeMiles (I only have 11,000 left), so I’m thinking of taking advantage of this offer to replenish my account. It’s always good to have a reserve of Star Alliance miles, and I find that I burn LifeMiles more quickly than just about any other currency.
So if you’ve been waiting on this offer but want to take advantage of it, make sure you register today, and then wait 24 hours before you buy miles.
