Special LifeMiles Promo For OMAAT Readers: Buy Miles With A 140% Bonus

As I first wrote about last week, Avianca’s LifeMiles program is offering a 125-135% bonus on purchased miles. This is a fantastic opportunity to pick up miles that can be redeemed for first & business class tickets on Star Alliance airlines.

I’m happy to share that LifeMiles is offering a special increased bonus on purchased LifeMiles for readers of OMAAT. Readers can receive an additional bonus when buying LifeMiles over the next week, meaning you can earn up to a 140% bonus on purchased miles.

Here’s what the bonus chart looks like for OMAAT readers who register:

LifeMiles ordinarily sell for ~3.3 cents each, so if you max out the promotion and buy miles with a 140% bonus, you’re essentially paying just 1.375 cents per purchased mile, which is a fantastic value.

To take advantage of this offer you have to register on this page between February 21 and February 27, and then have to buy miles between February 22 and February 28, 2017.

You have to wait 24 hours from the time you register until you buy miles through the offer to get the better bonus. You should see the better bonus reflected on the purchase page once you’re eligible.

So I’d highly recommend registering now, and then you can always still decide if you want to take advantage of the promotion later. I’m low on LifeMiles at the moment myself, so am seriously considering taking advantage of this offer.

As a reminder of some of the LifeMiles award costs for popular routings:

  • U.S. to Europe in business class costs 63,000 miles
  • U.S. to Europe in first class costs 87,000 miles
  • U.S. to Southeast Asia in business class costs 78,000 miles
  • U.S. to North Asia in first class costs 90,000 miles

ANA first class between the U.S. and Japan for ~$1,250 one-way is a pretty darn good value, if you ask me.

Or business class between the U.S. and Europe will just run you ~$870, which is great as well, especially when you consider the good award availability on airlines like Austrian and LOT out of LAX.

Thanks to LifeMiles for offering this special bonus for OMAAT readers, and I hope lots of you are able to take advantage of it!

  1. Do they still have an annual cap on how many miles you can buy?

Use your LM credit card and it’s an even better deal since you get 3x miles per dollar spent.

  2. For anyone jumping on this – be aware that Lifemiles has greatly increased cancellation fees (no up to $200)

  3. How is *A redemption availability when booking with these? Is it similar / do you see the same availability as what you see if using UA, for example?

  4. I have had a very hard time finding biz redemptions to Europe from east coast. Almost nothing over next 4 months iad or JFK on Lufthansa I would seriously consider them if they had availability

  5. I don’t think you get 15%. Instead, you’ll get 3x per $1 spent with the Banco Popular Credit Card.
Anybody have any idea, whether the purchase with Life Miles will count towards Chase Sapphire 3x per $1 spent with travel?

  6. Ive found space from Geneva to New York on UA. From experience, does anyone know if LifeMiles gets the same availability as UA? Thanks!

  7. @ Teddy – It does count as airline spend for CSR. Even better is that it counts as airfare spend with Amex Plat for 5x.

  8. as for availability using LM, if you plan far out (like end of schedule) it’s pretty easy to find availability. (I booked NH and TG F IAD-NRT-BKK and NH C/F SIN-NRT-IAD for November in December)

But in the intermediate times things are hit and miss. The calendar search thing helps somewhat. Unfortunately searching for DC-BKK next month a couple of weeks ago I got lots of “mixed cabin” results including UA Y legs among other Y legs which were always the longest segments.

As always having flexible dates and airport options helps. But their online search engine is quite slow.

This offer is pretty good. But given the annual cap I think I’ll wait for a while and see if any better offers come up since I don’t need them so badly at the moment. I seem to recall a 2 for 1 plus 50% offer in the not so distant past.

  9. Anyone has experience booking EVA air with LifeMiles? I heard their customer service is bad so what if you need to change your date after initial booking?

  10. I always wonder though, if i for example take a mix cabin award, e.g. hkg to muc, muc to man. hkg to muc is business class while muc to man is economy run by 2 different company, which luggage rule should i follow? the one first company that i take or follow the rules of the last company? this is booking via lifemiles of course.

  11. So does the 200k per year limit mean that you could buy 480k miles all at once with this promotion? 200k + 140% bonus?

  12. The recent 400% increase in cancellation fees makes this much less attractive and is worthy of a mention in a blog post! This makes the tickets, effectively, much less flexible.

  13. Thanks for the above info about availability, etc. How is the ease of booking with Lifemiles on *A? Are most flights of interest with *A partners able to be booked directly with their website, or do I have to call and deal with being a non-elite customer on hold with primarily Spanish speaking agents?

  14. This question from Ryan seems important:

“LifeMiles card from Banco Popular gets an additional 15% discount on purchased miles right?

15% discount on purchases of miles with Multiply Your Miles2

    From: https://www.lifemilescreditcard.com/WLInternet/WlInternet_ProductFeatures.aspx?ProductId=2#!”

It does seem like this fits within the terms and conditions for the 15% Banco Popular discount. Does anyone have any experience with this discount? If it works, it brings the cost per mile down to “OMG!” range.

  15. Is the availability for StarAlliance awards different than from other StarAlliance programs? I just tried a flight from HKG to SYD and Aeroplan showed multiple choices via Singapore Airlines for 70,000 return economy and Lifemiles shows no availability in October/November this year. Tried again a random trip YVR to SAN and Aeroplan gives me multiple options on my days (including direct on AC and connect on UA) yet Lifemiles shows availability a day earlier and day later for my dates on UA only. I know these aren’t the best usage of Staralliance points. I see lots of availability on Avios between HKG and SYD but I wanted to test out the booking engine to see how it compares with Aeroplan’s.

  16. Ben… just signed up for LifeMiles. One note of caution is that one’s LifeMiles account number is essential one’s passport number.

How about availability in F on NH from US to Japan? Checking LAX-TKO it seems pretty slim pickings, actually just one availability close-in dates.

  17. PS please advise best approaches for actually booking flights… use Web site, call centers, etc., per OP’s comment.

  18. Recently, I’ve found it difficult to find any award first class seats on Lifemiles, for example from TPE to any city in Europe. I think it’s a bit weird. I can find some combinations of flight departing from TPE in first class on UA website but those seats do not show on Lifemiles. Does anyone come across this problem? Lucky, do you know why? Would you mind searching first class seats from TPE to CDG in first?

  19. @Rob – click on the link “Register on this page” and you are sent to a page where you can input the membership number.

  20. Hi Lucky! Do you know if it is possible to make award bookings on their website for family members? Do they simple ask for the passenger’s information or can it only be for the person who owns the LifeMile account? Thanks!

  21. The 15% discount on Multiply Your Miles purchases does NOT apply to straight mileage purchases, so no you cannot combine these discounts.

  22. Hi Lucky, sorry, one last question. For award tickets, does Avianca have a 24 hour free cancellation for award tickets or do they charge $200 even if you immediately cancel? Thanks!

  23. How good is this deal?m Have there been better deals to purchase LM?

I am new to Lifemiles, have the credit card….. trying to understand if this is such a good deal.

  24. Is anyone having issue with booking through the Lifemiles website?

I can’t seem to complete any transaction for the past week…
