Yesterday we saw the welcome bonus on the Chase Sapphire Reserve reduced from 100,000 points to 50,000 points upon completing minimum spend, though there’s still one other card that has a 100,000 point welcome bonus for the time being.
The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN through January 25, 2017, meaning that you have less than two weeks left to take advantage of the offer. This offer has been around since early October, and a lot of people have taken advantage of it. If you haven’t yet, I’d highly recommend doing so.
Amex Business Platinum Card welcome bonus
This card has the following welcome bonus:
- 50,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $5,000 within three months
- An additional 50,000 Membership Rewards points after spending another $15,000 within that same period
I know that’s a big minimum spend, though nowadays you can put almost anything on a credit card, including tax payments. Even if you only earn the 50,000 point welcome bonus, there’s potentially a lot of value to be had, as the card’s perks go far beyond the sign-up bonus.
Redeem your 100K Amex points towards a Singapore Airlines Suites Class ticket
While the card has a $450 annual fee, it comes with all kinds of amazing perks that help offset it. These include::
- $200 annual airline fee credit
- Access to Boingo hotspots
- 10 Gogo passes
- Access to American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts
- Access to Delta SkyClubs
- Priority Pass Select membership
- Access to the American Express Centurion Lounges in Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, etc.
- A Global Entry fee credit
- Gold elite status with Hilton HHonors, Starwood Preferred Guest, and Marriott Rewards
The best perk offered by the Amex Business Platinum Card
Perhaps the biggest perk of this card is that just having this card increases the value of all your Amex Membership Rewards points, even those earned on other cards. That’s because the card offers up to a 35% points refund when using the “Pay With Points” option, which is essentially an opportunity to redeem all your Amex points for two cents each towards the cost of airfare. While I’d usually prefer to convert transferrable points into partner airline miles, I’d say this has the potential to be an even better value.
The benefit applies on your designated airline, which you can choose once per year. On top of that, it applies for first & business class tickets on all airlines. So first you’ll want to select your airline, assuming you’re redeeming for economy. Personally I see there being a lot of value in this benefit for the purpose of booking discounted premium cabin tickets.
Then you’ll pay the full points price for the redemption — typically you’re charged one Amex point per cent of airfare.
So you need all the Amex points required for the redemption at the time you ticket, and then after the fact you’ll get a refund of half the points.
Getting approved for the Amex Business Platinum Card
Some issuers make it difficult for small businesses to get a line of credit with them, though I find that Amex is among the best issuers when it comes to approving people for a small business card, even if their business is still fairly new. Last year I shared Ford’s experience getting approved for an Amex small business card as a sole proprietorship, and this card should be no different.
Also keep in mind that anecdotally applying for Amex small business cards doesn’t count towards the Chase 5/24 limit.
The fantastic welcome bonus on the Amex Business Platinum Card is expected to decrease in less than two weeks. Not only does the card offer a great welcome bonus, but it offers excellent long term perks, a redemption option that increases the value of all your Amex points, and the card is generally quite easy to be approved for. If you haven’t yet applied for this card, I’d highly recommend doing so.
