Now Available: SPG Moments US Open Packages

As I wrote about last week, SPG Moments packages for the US Open are becoming available as of today. For those of you not familiar, SPG Moments is Starwood’s experiences marketplace. SPG Moments allows you to redeem Starpoints for tickets to sold out events, including concerts, sporting events, cultural activities, etc.

I’ve experienced a few SPG Moments, including the SPG Suite at the US Openthe SPG Suite at a One Direction concert, and the SPG Suite at an Adele concert.

Anyway, if you’re a tennis fan, SPG Moments packages for the US Open are now available. As of now it looks like there are just tickets available for the SPG Suite, though I suspect more packages will be added later today, including courtside seats and other experiences.

As of now there are packages available for August 30 through September 5, including both day and night sessions.

The catch, unfortunately, is that it looks like Starwood has raised the cost of these packages. You used to be able to get a pair of seats in an SPG Suite for 25,000 Starpoints, while now the cost is 50,000 Starpoints. That seriously changes the value proposition of this.

On one hand I can’t blame Starwood since the packages sold out really quickly at 25,000 Starpoints each, but it sure feels like a lot less of a deal when you’re parting with 50,000 Starpoints for two seats. I value Starpoints at ~2.2 cents each, so to me 50,000 Starpoints are worth ~$1,100. That’s a big sum of points to part with in exchange for half a day of tennis.

At the same time, keep in mind that otherwise there’s not really an easy way to get tickets to a suite at the US Open, and it’s so much more fun to watch tennis with access to an air conditioned room, free food and drinks, etc.

As a point of comparison, renting out a 20 person suite at the US Open typically costs ~$18,000-22,000 per half day, not including catering.

Bottom line

If you’re a big tennis fan, being able to watch tennis from the SPG Suite is awesome. At the same time, it’s a lot less of a deal at 50,000 Starpoints for a package of two seats, rather than 25,000 Starpoints. Given how expensive suite experiences otherwise would be it’s still a good deal relatively speaking, but then again most of us wouldn’t be in a position to spend ~$20,000 on an afternoon of tennis for 20 of our closest friends.

I still suspect many of these packages will sell out pretty quickly, so if you’re interested I’d hop on this as soon as possible.

Anyone still planning on buying US Open SPG Suite tickets for 50,000 Starpoints?

  1. Would’ve been a good deal for 25K SPG points. I would’ve even considered it for up to 35K, but 50K Starpoints for 2 tickets is a ripoff imho.

  2. They were never 25,000 starpoints. Last year was 50k, 2014 was 45k, and the 3 years before that was 35k.

  3. You are way behind. These were available starting Saturday and earlier today, Monday, they released the full slate of events.
