IHG Rewards Club is running a promotion for Points & Cash booking made between July 8 and August 7, 2016, for stays through September 30, 2016.

Those paying with the IHG® Rewards Club Select Credit Card can receive a 15% discount on the cash component of a Cash & Points booking.

On top of that, keep in mind that those with the IHG® Rewards Club Select Credit Card receive a 10% points refund when they redeem their points, for a total refund of up to 100,000 points per calendar year.

Points & Cash with IHG works a bit differently than with some other hotel chains. For example, at Hilton, Hyatt, and Starwood, Points & Cash availability is capacity controlled and can represent an exceptional value. In the case of IHG, Points & Cash is available as long as a standard reward night is available, and simply decreases the cost of your stay by 5,000-20,000 points for a fixed dollar value.

For example, below are the Points & Cash options at the InterContinental New York Times Square, factoring in the 15% discount on the cash component:

As you can see, the biggest discount would save you 20,000 points for a total of $106.25. That means you’re basically spending 0.53 cents in place of each IHG Rewards Club point, which is a pretty great deal. Personally I value IHG Rewards Club points at ~0.5 cents each.

Also keep in mind that if you cancel an IHG reward booking where you used Points & Cash, you get the full points back, rather than the cash you paid. In other words, if you booked the award for 40,000 points plus $106.25, you’d actually receive a refund of 60,000 points if you needed to cancel. So you can even use this promotion as a means of acquiring IHG points at a discount, since points acquired through this method don’t count towards the annual cap of purchased points.

Bottom line

This isn’t life changing since the promotion just impacts the cash portion of a Points & Cash booking. At the same time, when you factor in the 15% discount on the cash portion and the 10% discount on the points portion thanks to the IHG® Rewards Club Select Credit Card, you’re looking at a very nice deal. Some will find this most useful as a way of acquiring IHG points at a discount by booking Points & Cash reservations and then canceling them.

  1. You might want to mention that IHG award nights are themselves capacity-controlled and can be very hard to come by at some properties.

Of course, this is not an issue if you just want to make such a reservation to buy discounted points at 0.0053 cent, but it may not be worth the hassle and potential scrutiny by IHG. Nowadays, IHG very frequently runs points sales at 0.0565 cent.

  2. @Al says:

I think you re mixing up the numbers here. That should be either:

0.0053 and 0.00565 dollars (per point)

0.53 and 0.565 cents (per point).
