Earn An Extra 10K Starpoints With The SPG Business Amex (Targeted)

In the interest of full disclosure, One Mile At A Time earns a referral bonus for anyone that’s approved through some of the below links. These are the best publicly available offers that we have found for each card. Please check out our advertiser policy for further details about the partners we work with. Thanks for your support!

The Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express and Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express are among the most rewarding for everyday spend. I value Starpoints at ~2.2 cents each, given the variety of great uses for them — they can efficiently be redeemed for hotel stays, airline mileage transfers, or a combination of both. So for spend which doesn’t otherwise fall into a bonus category, the co-branded Starwood credit card is among my favorites.

While it’s already rewarding for everyday spend, there’s a targeted spend bonus at the moment for those with the SPG Business Amex, as follows:

  • Earn 5,000 bonus Starpoints after you spend $5,000 in qualifying purchases
  • Earn an additional 5,000 bonus Starpoints after you spend an additional $5,000 in qualifying purchases on your card

If you qualify, registration and spending are required by October 15, 2016. In other words, if targeted, spending $10,000 on the SPG Business Amex will earn you a total of 20,000 Starpoints, which is pretty awesome.

I wasn’t originally going to write about this offer, since it’s targeted. I tend to think those who are targeted will know they’re eligible because they’ll have received a solicitation, so there’s no point in making others jealous. However, in my case I didn’t receive an email, though I did visit the registration page for the promotion, and found out I’m eligible.

I logged in using my American Express credentials, and was presented with the details of the promotion.

I was able to register without issue, and even received an email confirmation.

Some won’t be eligible, however, and will instead receive the below message when logging in.

Using my valuation of ~2.2 cents per Starpoint, that’s like a return of ~4.4% on everyday, non-bonused spend, which is pretty incredible. For those who pay quarterly taxes, keep in mind that you can pay federal taxes by credit card for a fee of 1.87%. If your tax bill is big enough, that means paying $10,000 in taxes will cost you $187, and will net you 20,000 Starpoints, which is less than a penny per Starpoint. That’s incredible.

Even so, earning two Starpoints per dollar spent would hands down make the SPG Business Amex my go to card for everyday, non-bonused spend.

Bottom line

Not everyone will be targeted for this offer, though it’s at least worth checking if you’re eligible. I didn’t receive an email about the offer, but was still eligible.

For those who were targeted, will this promotion change what card you use for your everyday spend over the coming months?

  1. I can not find where it specifies what “qualified purchases” are. Have you seen it?

  2. I found this statement: “Qualifying purchases do NOT include fees or interest charges, balance transfers, cash advances, purchases of travelers checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, or purchases of other cash equivalents.”

Spouse was targeted, and did register for this promotion, but these terms may be too strict.

  3. Lucky, are you still publishing the rest of your trip report? Just seems to have stopped….

  4. @ John — Sorry about the intermission. Most recent installment just published, and more coming shortly. 🙂

  5. @ RR — Those are the standard terms for any promotion. Prepaid cards in practice doesn’t include gift cards purchased through retailers, etc.

  6. @lucky — Great! I had just earlier found a similar distinction online between prepaid and gift cards, and am glad to see you confirming that.

  7. I may be missing something, but it appears that this bonus is capped at 10,000 points. Where are you getting 20,000 from?

  8. @ Mike — That includes the 10,000 Starpoints you usually earn, plus the 10,000 Starpoint bonus.

  9. When you register for this targeted offer, it will ask for an email (to send the confirmation email). If you enter one that is different from the one in your SPG profile, it will automatically update your SPG profile to this other email. I didn’t like that, but hey – at least I was targeted! Now I know where I will be concentrating my spend in the next few months. Haven’t been spending on this card lately – maybe that is why I was targeted.

  10. Canadian users of the Business SPG card don’t seem to be eligible (or not targeted).

  11. Well I get the screen that says its only for invited guests of the SPG AMEX program. Well I’ve had this card for a few years and even got cheated out of the extra miles they promised if you spend a certain amount of money within the first 3 months and now I am not eligible for this. I guess I will be cancelling SPG AMEX first thing tomorrow.

  12. I was targeted for a similar promotion on my Delta Amex Business Card with 5k skymile bonus on 2K spend.
