Delta’s Pre-Black Friday SkyMiles Award Sale

Delta SkyMiles has announced what they’re calling a “Pre-Black Friday Award Sale,” whereby many domestic awards are being discounted to 10,000 SkyMiles each way.

Through this sale, awards to “select US cities” are available for just 10,000 SkyMiles each way. The basics of the promotion are as follows:

  • Valid for roundtrip travel within the “lower 48”
  • Valid for tickets booked through November 30, 2015
  • Valid for travel between January 5 and February 24, 2016 (blackout dates of February 12-16, and February 19 apply)
  • 21 day advance purchase required
  • Saturday night minimum stay is required

Delta doesn’t actually publish a full list of eligible cities, but instead just provides some sample city pairs.

Based on what I’m seeing, though, a majority of city pairs are eligible as long as all other conditions are met. In other words, if the award is within the lower 48, roundtrip, has a Saturday night minimum stay, and would otherwise cost 25,000 miles roundtrip, it’ll be discounted by 20%, to 20,000 miles.

For example, even awards between New York and Los Angeles are available for 20,000 miles roundtrip:

January and February are generally pretty slow months for travel, so Delta’s saver level economy award space is quite good for those dates, meaning there are plenty of opportunities to take advantage of this sale.

Bottom line

While redeeming for domestic economy isn’t my favorite use of miles, this can represent quite a good value in some cases. Ultimately it’s a 20% savings on the normal costs, with the caveat of having to book roundtrip and staying at least a Saturday night.

I’m sure many people can save a few miles using this promotion, when a revenue ticket might otherwise be expensive. And domestic economy award tickets on Delta aren’t that bad, since elite members can actually receive complimentary upgrades on them.

Do you plan on taking advantage of Delta’s pre-Black Friday award sale?

(Tip of the hat to Mac)

  1. Personally, I think Black Friday is fine online, but I personally despi— disagree with the idea in general. First of all, it creates the need for employees at stores and shops to work longer hours due to the sales, which leads to less time at home with their family for them. Sorry to get off topic, but I strongly do not like the tradition.

  2. So for a promotion only valid for travel within the US… they use a promo photo of Peyto Lake in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada?

  3. So, Delta’s burning off some excess seat inventory with “lower” brackets?
Good luck finding these seats at times you want to fly.

l was looking for LAX-IAD the other day and the cheapest RT, in this same date range, was 60,000.
