One of the cool things about many hotel loyalty programs is that you can earn bonus points for dining at a hotel restaurant even when not staying at the hotel. While that’s not useful at all hotels (given that most hotels don’t have great restaurants), there are some hotels which have “destination” restaurants.
Starwood has just announced a promotion, Spice It Up, whereby they’re offering up to double Starpoints for dining at one of their participating hotel restaurants through July 31, 2015.
The catch is that you only earn double Starpoints on dining when you’re not booked to stay at the hotel at the same time. That’s a bummer, though I imagine the promotion will still be useful to some.
Registration is required by July 15, 2015, and through this promotion you’ll earn:
- Two bonus Starpoints per dollar spent (only base Starpoints are doubled, and not the elite bonus Starpoints); for example, as a 75 night SPG Platinum I ordinarily earn four Starpoints per dollar spent, so I’d earn a total of six Starpoints per dollar spent at participating restaurants
- 250 bonus Starpoints every time you spend at least $200 at a participating restaurant in a single transaction
This promotion would be much more useful if it were valid in conjunction with a stay at a Starwood property. I’ve certainly found myself on occasion dining at hotel restaurants even when not staying at that hotel, so I’m sure I’ll take advantage of this promotion at one point or another.

The promotion itself isn’t enough reason to dine at a hotel restaurant, though it does sweeten the pot a bit.
Do you ever dine at hotel restaurants when not staying at a hotel?
