In early March I wrote about the 70,000 point sign-up bonus on the IHG® Rewards Club Select Credit Card, which was only supposed to be available through March 31, 2015. Well, it’s worth noting that this sign-up bonus has now been extended through May 31, 2015.

The card offers a 70,000 point sign-up bonus after spending $1,000 within three months of account opening, provided you haven’t received the bonus in the past 24 months. The annual fee on the card is $49, though it’s waived the first year.

As a reminder, the this is one of the most compelling hotel credit cards out there. While I don’t value it that much for everyday spend, it’s a card I’m holding onto long term. Why?

  • You get an anniversary free night certificate every year, which is valid at any IHG property worldwide, pending availability; given IHG’s global footprint, that should justify the card for just about anyone, given the annual fee is only $49
  • You get IHG Rewards Club Platinum status for as long as you have the card, which gets you bonus points, room upgrades, etc.
  • You get a 10% rebate on points redemptions, for up to 100,000 points back each year

Redeem your free night certificate at a hotel that would cost ~$450 per night

Bottom line

The IHG® Rewards Club Select Credit Card is an absolute no brainer, and one I applied for last year and plan on keeping in my wallet for years to come. Given IHG’s global footprint, this is a card which virtually everyone will get value out of. And ultimately keeping some cards long term also helps keep your credit score high.

Who doesn’t like getting points back when redeeming points?

  1. If I applied today (let’s say April 2) and then made the minimum spend in one week, would my closing date be around May 2? Would the 70,000 points post at the closing date? I’m trying to redeem for a hotel stay on May 15th. Thanks!

  2. @ sdfamily — The points should post shortly after the closing date. You can even have your statement close earlier, and then the points could post even earlier as well.

  3. Hey Lucky, how do you get the statement to close earlier? Can you just ask for it to close earlier, and they’ll do it? That way you get the reward faster?

  4. @ Eric — When you activate your card by phone you can tell them what you’d like your statement close date to be.
