20% Hyatt Award Points Refund Posting Within A Week

In mid-February Hyatt launched a promotion whereby they’re offering those with their co-branded Chase credit card a 20% refund on award redemptions through July 31, 2015.

The promotion is even better than that, since it applies to previously made reservations as well as to those that apply for the Chase Hyatt Visa during the promotion period.

I’ll basically receive as many points through this promotion as I do through Hyatt’s spring promotion, given that a 20% refund on award redemptions is huge.

Best of all, this applies to both free night and Points + Cash redemptions, so is extremely lucrative regardless of how you prefer to redeem your points.

The terms of the promotion indicate that the 20% points refund should post within 4-6 weeks.

Though as View from the Wing notes, in practice the 20% points refund is posting much faster than that, typically within a week. For example, I stayed at the Park Hyatt New York for one night on February 17, and the 6,000 point refund posted a week later.

That means you could actually spend the refunded points again during the promotion period, and earn even more points back.

The timing of this is especially perfect since I made a booking at the Park Hyatt Maldives before it was switched from a Category 6 to Category 7 property, meaning I paid 25,000 points per night rather than the new cost of 30,000 points per night. I’ll receive a 5,000 point per night discount on top of that, so am only paying 20,000 points per night — that’s the least the hotel has ever cost.

As you’d expect, the 20% refund is only posting after the actual hotel stay, and not just after the booking is made.

Given that I live in hotels full time, this promotion has caused me to redeem a lot more points during the promotion period, since I have the flexibility to stay where I want when I want.

Has this 20% discount on award redemptions changed your Hyatt stay patterns between now and July?

  1. Yes mine hit today less than a week after the stay…………a nice promotion……..can’t wait for the Vendome rebate…………

  2. You don’t have to answer, Lucky. Around what time of the year will you be at the Hyatt Maldives? Appreciate your help and answers on this blog and just wanted to say hi if we happen to be there around the same time.

  3. I recently signed up for my Hyatt card but for some reason I cannot sign up for this promotion (“This Hyatt Gold Passport account number is not eligible to participate in this promotion.”). Does anyone know why?

    Thank you!

  4. Hi Lucky — Is it possible to use Gold Passport points for a room upgrade if the room is booked using the 2 free nights courtesy the Hyatt credit card?

  5. is this a targeted promo? i’ve had the card for over 2 years now, but the site says i’m ineligible.

  6. Hey Lucky, I redeemed points for a stay that occurred Feb 14-19. The line item in my account shows 50,000 points being debited on Feb 18. I assume I’m eligible to get 10,000 points back but it hasn’t hit yet, any idea if there’s an issue that my stay began before the 17th? Really great promo though regardless.

  7. I somehow missed this promo up until yesterday, which clearly means I haven’t been reading the blogs with my usual obsessiveness. Need to remedy that ASAP.

Anyway, I registered for the promo yesterday, but actually had four C+P stays between Feb 17 and Feb 27 (Two stays at the PH Saigon, one at the HR Da Nang and one at the Andaz Tokyo) for a total of 47,000 points redeemed.

Looking at the T&Cs, I feel like I have 9400 points coming to me. Or, am I wrong and I don’t get the rebate for those points because I hadn’t registered for the promo yet?

What do you think? If I am eligible, should I wait a couple weeks before asking for the points, or try and get this dealt with now?

  8. @ Lauren — I think you should be eligible, so I’d maybe wait a couple of weeks for the points to post, and otherwise you can try to request them retroactively.

  9. @ CanesLawMarty — I believe the promo is only for stays starting February 17, so you may not be eligible. Can’t hurt to call Gold Passport and ask, though.

  10. Do you know if gifting award nights would still qualify? Especially the new Diamond gift option with benefits?

  11. I thought it was determined this was supposed to apply if you signed up for the card by 3/31, but the 20% off registration isn’t letting me register despite having received the credit card and it showing up on my Hyatt account.
