Silvercar $59 Rentals Extended Through February

Silvercar is the innovative company that actually makes renting cars fun.

As I’ve explained in the past, they have only one kind of car, an Audi A4, and it comes with a bunch of cool features. This includes free GPS, wifi, satellite radio, fair toll tracking, and a fair fuel plan.

I had my first Silvercar experience at LAX earlier in the year, and was really impressed.

We got a literally brand new Audi A4 with just 11 miles on it. For a $59 rental, that’s incredible.

Originally the $59 rental sale was only supposed to be valid through January, though per an email I received from Silvercar yesterday, this offer has been extended for rentals through February 28, 2015:

Last week we shared some good news with you. ‘Memba that? Since we’re on the good news kick, we figure “why stop now?!” So we’re not going to.

We’re extending our $59/day all drives in all markets thru February! You read that right. ALL drives. ALL markets. Just $59/day.

As stated by our own CEO, Luke Schneider, “We’re successful because we challenge the traditional rental paradigm of high prices, infuriating fees, and subpar rental experiences, so when we see competition increase price—without increasing actual value—we’re happy to show the world we think differently. There’s a reason our customer satisfaction and loyalty scores are four times the industry average: we know what customers want and we know how to give it to them. And now we’re doing it all with our best pricing yet.”Annnnnnnnd… swish.

Stay excited,

Furthermore, if you haven’t yet rented from Silvercar, both the person referring and person being referred can receive a $25 electronic Visa gift card after your first rental. Simply go to the sign-up page on, and enter the “Referral Code” at the bottom of the page. If you’d like to use mine (which I’d of course be incredibly grateful for) it’s BSCHLAPPIG, though feel free to post yours below as well, and someone else can use it.

$59 is in many cases cheaper than what other agencies charge. In many cases it’s more expensive, in which case I still consider it to be a reasonable premium for a truly nice rental experience. But I also realize everyone values this stuff differently…

  1. My first and last Silvercar rental was at DFW a few months ago. Going into the Silvercar rental area at the car rental building there isn’t any signage to tell you what to do. I finally found one employee in the back office behind the counter eating her lunch, but she didn’t speak any English. After about 20 minutes of going back and forth between English and my broken Spanish and her letting me talk to a supervisor in Austin on her personal cell phone, we figured out that the reason I couldn’t get my rental car opened up was because the Silvercar satellite system was down, and it would take an hour for it to come back up so that I could drive off in one of their “car rentals that don’t suck”. The employee had no interest in finding another car for me at another company, and for that matter didn’t even understand what I was asking for. So I took the shuttle back to the terminal to get a sandwich and cup of coffee and came back in an hour. Now there were three other customers also trying to get into their cars, but the girl had gone home because her “shift had ended”. Had I not been there earlier and came back no one would have known what was going on. Finally after about 30 more minutes all the cars in the lot started “beeping” and we could all get in the cars and drive off – apparently at headquarters reset the company routers that all of their technology is based on.

I had decided to rent from Silvercar because they were doing a $50 Visa gift card rebate. Last week (about three months after I rented), after numerous phone calls to their headquarters (there’s no one at the terminal counter to call, the company doesn’t answer emails from their website, and they don’t return voice messages left on their customer service line) I had to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau in order to get my $50 Visa gift card.

If anyone decides to do this $59 special, I’d keep in mind that many times you get what you pay for, and I would book a backup reservation with another company just in case.

  2. Ben
I have heard good things about the company but it doesn’t seem to be a particularly good deal – regardless of whether it’s an Audi or not.

  3. So if the deal is $59/day all drives, all markets why is my rate for a Jan 22 – Jan 23 rental in Dallas $85?

  4. @ Anne H — It looks like the amount above $59 are the taxes. In Dallas a lot of the fees are per rental as opposed to per day, so you’re getting hit especially hard for a one day rental.

  5. After your post last week I tried renting a car at LAX over the weekend – with the special pricing they were only $5 more for the weekend than a Chevy Cruze from Hertz.

My flight was delayed for 4 hours which put me into LAX at 1am. Unfortunately Silvercar is only open until 11pm – they said they’d wait all the way until 11:15 for me. Even Hertz at the Fargo Airport waits until the last rental of the day finally arrives on delayed flights, despite posted hours. Nothing like facing a 4 hour delay and late arrival and also having to deal with finding an alternate car option.

The only nice thing is that I was able to communicate directly to the LAX Silvercar office via text message. It appeared they were going to do the curbside pickup, so I was sad to be missing out on that. But, to my benefit, when I went to rebook a Hertz, the price had dropped by about $70.

Still willing to give them a shot, but probably only if I’m arriving earlier in the day.
