Register Now For Starwood’s Double Play Promotion

About a week ago Starwood leaked the details of their first quarter 2015 promotion, entitled “Double Play.”

As expected, registration for Starwood’s Double Play promotion is now open, given that the promotion is valid for stays starting today.

Starwood Double Play promotion details

Starwood’s Double Play promotion will be valid for stays at eligible properties between January 5 and April 15, 2015.

Earn double Starpoints for stays at the W Taipei

Through this promotion, SPG members will earn:

  • Double base Starpoints on eligible stays of two or more consecutive nights
  • 1,000 bonus Starpoints for every five eligible nights, up to 4,000 bonus Starpoints

There’s a list of non-participating properties for the promotion, though it’s one of the smaller lists I’ve seen for an SPG promotion, with only a bit over 100 properties. That’s good news.

It’s worth noting that while you only earn double base Starpoints at participating properties, even stays at non-participating properties count towards the 1,000 bonus Starpoints threshold.

Registration will stay open through March 31, 2015. Bonus Starpoints should post to qualifying accounts 2-4 weeks after the qualifying stay posts. Eligible stays include all revenue stays that are eligible for the accrual of Starpoints.

Value of Starwood’s Double Play promotion

For stays of at least two nights you’d earn two bonus Starpoints per dollar spent at participating properties. I value Starpoints at ~2.2 cents each, so that’s like an additional ~4.4% return on those stays.

On top of that, you’re earning an extra 200 Starpoints per night, for up to 20 nights. So that’s like a return of an extra ~$4.40 per night.

That’s not an especially lucrative bonus, and keep in mind this is after making quite a few assumptions:

  • You stay at participating properties
  • You stay at least two nights
  • You stay in increments of five nights
  • You only stay a total of 20 nights

Bottom line

I wasn’t expecting an especially lucrative promotion given that hotels are already quite full. This is certainly better than nothing, though at the same time I can’t imagine anyone will be changing around any stays because of promotions like this. Ironically Starwood’s promotion for making bookings through their app using an American Express Card is more lucrative than this.

Now I’m just curious about the details of Hyatt’s first quarter promotion, which should start a week from today (hopefully they announce the details before then, though).

What do you think of Starwood’s Double Play promotion, and how is it impacting your hotel booking decisions?

  1. Lucky,
i am staying at a hyatt property from jan 9th to 11 and another hyatt from jan 11 to 13th. can the hyatt promo be back dated?

  2. And of course the one SPG property where I will likely stay 20-25 times this year (and for about 10 nights during the promo period) is on the blackout list.
