What Happens When You Threaten To Blow Up A Plane In Thailand?

Here’s a crazy story about two passengers acting up on a Thai AirAsia flight from Bangkok to Nanjing this past Thursday, which had to return to Bangkok. Via the Bangkok Post:

Witnesses said the man threatened to blow up the plane and his girlfriend told other passengers she wanted to commit suicide, Charles Liu posted on the Nanfang Insider blog on Friday. Earlier, the couple…

Earlier, the couple were angry when they discovered they were not sitting together, which happened because they were part of a tour group seated in alphabetical order.

A flight attendant accommodated by finding adjoining seats for them, but they still complained loudly, Mr Liu wrote.

During the flight, the woman bought a bowl of instant noodles and asked for boiling water which she splashed on one of the flight attendants.

The Daily Mail has a short video of the passenger apparently making threats:

So what happens when a plane turns around to the origin because you threatened to blow it up and threw hot water at the flight attendant?

Police later took the couple and their two friends to Don Muang police station where they settled the dispute with the flight attendant and the captain. A TAA spokesman said today the Chinese woman was…

A TAA spokesman said today the Chinese woman was allowed to leave Thailand this evening on a TAA flight back to Nanjing after she agreed to pay an undisclosed amount of compensation to the affected cabin…

Oh, Thailand! There’s nothing a bribe can’t get you out of there…

@concorde02 Up to now there is no mention of the settlement between the four people involved and Air Asia, the 1500 was paid to the flight attendant who was splashed of hot water. Judging the fact that Air Asia offered to fly the group of four back to NKG the following day and refuse to make statement on the group not getting off the aircraft, I'm assuming they are not mailing any bills on this...

And for the comments on Chinese tourists, this is what happens when you have a developing country of 1.5 billion people. You get all kinds of people, so don't generalize.

I would've liked to see this happen in the US.

I've been living in Thailand for the past 9 years and there have always been incidents with foreigners from various countries getting in some kind of trouble or offending Thai culture. The Russians and the Chinese take it to a new level of poor behavior and outright rudeness.

A Thai friend emailed me this Air Asia / Chinese couple story on Saturday morning with the caption "Typical...."

Also @ Lucky, I'm reading this post...

    @Reine,

Same here - and people used to complain about the "ugly Americans"... apparently they haven't had the privilege of running into Chinese or Russian tourists.

Ok. I have a confession to make. I've personally has some pretty bad run-ins with Chinese tourists on three different continents on five different trips and when I read stories like this one or the one where the family allowed their kid to defecate in the plane aisle, I start to think there is something to the bad rep Chinese tourists are getting.

really?? $1500 can't cover the price of the fuel they spent to fly back and fuel dump for landing... Air Asia should charge those bill to them.

And as far as I heard the amount of the settlement paid to the flight attendant involved is equal to roughly 1500 USD. plus they were also fined for about 50 USD each(the four of them) which is paid to the authority of Thailand

To add what @Herbertgzb quoted, this incident will also be included in the couple's personal credit record.
So yeah basically they screwed themselves as well...

That is not the end of it.
When returning to their home town, the couple refused to deplane asking air asia to give a public write up that their behavior was "not as bad as it has been publicized". By refused of doing so, the couple occupied the pulled bridge and threatened to beat up the officials of the airport persuading them.

This morning the Chinese Bureau of Toursim sent out a public document that "the four people has seriously damaged the public image of Chinese tourist, and has been fined for their behavior and damages". They also ordered the tour company in charge of these people to "improvise and change". The guide of the tour group has been "punished by corresponding regulations" as well. This document was published on national paper....

Only in Thailand where you can disrupt and delay a flight and end up with a slap on the wrist, or paying the right amount!

Why do these idiots keep recording altercations with vertical orientation on their phones? Surely they've seen how terrible it is with other videos...
