There’s nothing that influences my purchase decisions quite as much as miles. Sometimes they shouldn’t, but it just feels better to buy stuff when there are miles at stake.

As I’ve written about in the past, online shopping portals are a great way to maximize miles & points, and they’re especially practical since I do just about all my shopping online anyway. I should clarify that when I say “all my shopping,” I typically mean once per year, though apparently having a nephew means I have more “holiday shopping commitments” than I’ve had in the past.

But there are a few opportunities right now to get anywhere from 15 to 17 miles per dollar at Nordstrom, which certainly gets my attention.

10x US Airways Miles

The US Airways Dividend Miles Storefront is presently offering ten miles per dollar spent at Nordstrom. It looks like this offer goes through November 11th.

If you’ve already registered for the Storefront, you simply have to enter your Dividend Miles and last name. Otherwise registration is quick, and you should see Nordstrom listed as one of the featured offers at the bottom of the page.

I value US Airways miles at ~1.6 cents each, so that’s a 16% “return” on Nordstrom spend, by my valuation.

12x Southwest Rapid Rewards

Southwest is also offering bonus points through the Rapid Rewards Shopping portal, and their offer is slightly higher at 12 points per dollar.

According to MommyPoints, you can earn even more Southwest points based on your spending, so depending on how much shopping you have to do you can get up to an additional 1,200 Rapid Rewards points.

Southwest Rapid Rewards points are worth about ~1.4 cents if redeemed for Wanna Get Away fares, so this is about a 16.8% return, provided you have a use for Southwest points.

Plus an extra 5x points

Regardless of which portal you use, you can get 5x points per dollar by using your Chase Freedom® card. What makes the Chase Freedom® so great is that each quarter they have a different category where you earn 5% cash back. You earn the 5% cash back on up to $1,500 of spend in the bonus categories each quarter.

The bonus category for October – December consists of Amazon, Zappos, and “select department stores,” and Nordstrom is included in the latter. You just have to activate your 5% cash back bonus for the 4th quarter and then use your card as normal.

Added to the portal bonuses, you’re getting around 21% back on your purchases, which makes this a great deal!

Bottom line

I love earning miles for purchases I was going to make anyway. And if I have to shop (which I hate), I do like Nordstrom. They don’t mark up a lot of their products, the service is great, and they have a large selection of items, particularly online.

They also offer the option to buy online and pick up in store. Those transactions are still processed by, so you can earn miles without having to wait for shipping.

Hopefully some of you can take advantage of this offer!

  1. I got an email today from MileagePlus for 10 miles/dollar at Nordstrom’s plus 500 miles for spending $75 at any portal store.

  2. Lucky – Can you buy Nordstrom gift cards through this offer? If it does, using the gift cards at Nordstrom Rack would be very slick.

  3. Hi Lucky, for those Australians (and others) with Qantas FF memberships, their online mall currently has double point earning rates during the Christmas shopping season, so you can earn 10 points per dollar with David Jones, Neiman Marcus, and 8 points per dollar with Macy’s. Lower rates for Apple, eBay etc. Take a look here I’ve read also that Virgin AU have also upped their velocity points earn on their online shopping site as well.

  4. FWIW, Nordstrom will be offering Buy 1 Get 1 free mascara on Saturday, if anyone else has an expensive cosmetics habit.

  5. Nordstrom is amazing, but the retail store. Sometimes they have sales that are unbelievable.

The Rack has 25% clearance items during holidays ( Labor, MLK), think there will be one duringTHXG I purchased a few items, that were at ridiculous low prices , for those brands ( like Canali, Burberry and E. Zegna). Too bad they dont allow GC purchases here…argg

  6. Perhaps this can be filed under stupid things to complain about, but I noticed today on the new UR site when you go to the shopping portal it now includes your base points. So a store listed as 2x is really 1x that you get on all purchases and 1x bonus. Really shallow move by Chase to make it look marginally more attractive.

  7. Seems like Nordstroms dropped all creditcard/reward shopping Portals – cant find them anywhere now…
