Club Carlson has unveiled their fourth quarter promotion, entitled Points Or Nights. The promotion is valid for stays between November 4 and December 30, 2014.

Through this promotion you have the choice between:

  • Double base Gold Points
  • Double night credits towards status

Registration is required prior to check-out of your first eligible stay, and you do have to select which reward you want at the time of registration — you can’t change it later.

Double Gold Points

Club Carlson members ordinarily earn 20 points per dollar spent at Club Carlson properties, so through this promotion would earn 40 points per dollar spent.

Keep in mind if you have the Club Carlson Premier Rewards Visa Signature® Card, you earn an additional 10 points per dollar spent. Furthermore, the card automatically comes with Gold status, which earns you a 35% bonus on base points. That’s an additional 7 points per dollar spent. That means you’re looking at a total of 57 Gold Points per dollar spent at Club Carlson properties when paying with the card.

I value Gold Points at ~0.4 cents each, so that’s like a return of 23%. That being said, it’s possible to get a lot more value out of points in conjunction with their co-branded credit card, since the second night of every award redemption is free. That potentially doubles the value of your points.

Double elite night credits

If you select this option, your elite night credits will be doubled. It’s worth noting that this doesn’t apply to elite stay credits, but rather only elite night credits.

In general I find Club Carlson elite tiers to be a bit too high given the benefits:

Like I said above, you automatically get Gold status with the Club Carlson Premier Rewards Visa Signature® Card, which gets you free internet, a welcome gift, and room upgrades.

Upgrade to Business Room at Radisson Blu as Club Carlson Gold

Obviously I’d only recommend choosing this option if you were really close to the next elite tier, as your elite night balance will reset next year. So unless it helps you achieve a higher tier, selecting this option would be a waste.

Bottom line

Hilton, Hyatt, IHG Rewards Club, and Starwood have all already announced their fourth quarter promotions, which are of varying value. Hilton and Starwood’s promotions aren’t especially lucrative, while Hyatt and IHG Rewards Club have targeted promotions that have the potential to be lucrative.

Club Carlson has always had an attractive return on hotel stays, and this promotion only improves that further.

  1. Thanks for sharing! A question about CC. I have Concierge status. I will renew this year, as my 30th stay is coming up. I will also reach in the end 74 total nights as per number of trips booked as of now at CC properties before year end. I have some more trips to plan and was wondering if I should book at CC properties or not. The thing is, as soon as my 30th stay is completed, my status is renewed, but what happens to the nights? Do they roll over to next year? And if so, how many roll over? If I understand correctly the T&Cs, they do, and their number is the difference between the total and the closest status under. Concierge requires 75 nights, and Gold 35. So far I will have 74, so meaning 74-35=39 will roll over. But If I book 2 extra nights, then I reach 76, and only 76-75=1 rolls over since the closest status requires then 75. What do you think?

  2. I had already booked a stay at a Paris Radisson Blu and was thinking about switching to a Marriott when the Club Carlson promotion arrived in my email inbox. I signed up for the promotion, double points option, but it’s not clear to me that my hotel is “participating”. Anyone know how to find out? I think I might need to contact Club Carlson directly. The double points promo will be the deciding factor, if the hotel I chose is not participating I’ll switch to the Marriott.
