IHG Rewards Club Bonus On Purchased Points

Through October 31, 2014, IHG Rewards Club is offering up to a 60% bonus on purchased points

The cost to purchase points varies based on how many you purchase, as follows:

  • 1,000 – 10,000 points for $13.50 per 1,000 points
  • 11,000 – 25,000 points for $12.50 per 1,000 points
  • 26,000 – 60,000 points for $11.50 per 1,000 points

Then they’re offering anywhere from 30% to 60% bonus points, depending on how many you purchase:

  • Purchase 5,000 to 19,000 points and get a 30% bonus
  • Purchase 20,000 to 39,000 points and get a 40% bonus
  • Purchase 40,000 to 49,000 points and get a 50% bonus
  • Purchase 50,000 to 60,000 points and get a 60% bonus

So if you max out this promotion and purchase 60,000 points you’d end up paying $690 and would get a total of 96,000 IHG Rewards Club points.

That’s a rate of ~0.719 cents per IHG Rewards Club point.

Comparing this to past promotions, IHG Rewards Club just offered a 100% bonus on purchased points about a week ago, which is the highest we ever saw. Prior to that, IHG Rewards Club offered an up to 60% bonus on purchased points in August, which was one of the better bonuses they’ve run. So this isn’t an amazing rate, though is among the better ones we’ve seen. As a reminder, there’s a way to indirectly purchase IHG Rewards Club points for 0.7 cents each, though it comes with some risks.

As a reminder IHG Rewards Club points purchases are processed by points.com, so wouldn’t qualify as hotel spend for the purposes of your credit card.

Here are the full terms:

Is it worth buying IHG points with a 60% bonus?

IHG Rewards Club charges at most 50,000 points per free night, so if buying points that means you’d be paying ~$360 per night f0r a stay at one of their top hotels. That’s not an amazing deal, but there are certainly hotels where that’s considerably lower than the retail cost of a stay.

  1. Lucky – could you elaborate on the risks? I just did the trick today because I was short a few thousand points for a redemption. Now I’m nervous that it will raise some red flag and get my account shut down or something!

  2. @ Girl — If you do it often there’s a chance they’ll shut down your account, though in moderation I doubt it will be an issue.
