IHG Rewards Club Bonus On Purchased Points

Through August 18, 2014, IHG Rewards Club is offering a widely targeted bonus of up to 60% on the purchase of points.

The cost to purchase points varies based on how many you purchase, as follows:

  • 1,000 – 10,000 points for $13.50 per 1,000 points
  • 11,000 – 25,000 points for $12.50 per 1,000 points
  • 26,000 – 60,000 points for $11.50 per 1,000 points

So if you max out this promotion and purchase 60,000 points (the most you can purchase in a calendar year) you’d end up paying $690 and would get a total of 96,000 IHG Rewards Club points.

That’s a rate of ~0.72 cents per IHG Rewards Club point.

Keep in mind there’s a workaround for purchasing IHG Rewards Club points for 0.7 cents each, so in almost all cases it’s not worth taking advantage of this offer. Back in the day purchased points would count towards elite status while points purchased through the workaround wouldn’t, but nowadays even purchased points don’t count towards elite status, so there’s not much of an advantage to purchasing points that way.

IHG Rewards Club points purchases are processed by points.com, so wouldn’t qualify as hotel spend for the purposes of your credit card.

  1. Given the increased aggression that IHG has shown in shutting down accounts of late, it might be worthwhile to pay the extra .02 cents per point to buy points through the channels they officially approve of.

  2. I find these comments from Lucky and other bloggers interesting, “it’s not worth purchasing these miles.” Really the last IHG points I purchased was a great bargain for ME. When staying at a IC that would have cost me $600/n was able to purchase what I needed for a fraction of what the stay would have cost me…

  3. @ Tony — I simply said it’s not worth taking advantage of this offer in comparison to buying them for slightly less through Points + Cash bookings. But farnorthtrader makes a good point above.
