IHG PointBreaks Preview

The most recent IHG Rewards Club’s PointBreaks preview was just posted in the IHG forum. The hotels on the list will be available for booking starting Monday, July 28, 2014, and will be valid for stays through Tuesday, September 30, 2014.

IHG Rewards Club’s PointBreaks is traditionally one of the best promotions in the hotel industry.  Through this promotion, select hotels are available for just 5,000 points per night. Since IHG Rewards Club points can be indirectly purchased for 0.7 cents each, that’s like booking stays at certain hotels for just $35 per night.

Looking at the preview list there are (as usual) over 150 hotels, and while the list could technically change prior to Monday, the properties involved are pretty lackluster.

The most recent round of PointBreaks was probably the worst I’d ever seen, so it’s nice to see at least a handful of Intercontinental Hotels included this time around:

RomaniaIntercontinental Bucharest
ColombiaIntercontinental Cali
Costa RicaIntercontinental Costa Rica at Multiplaza Mall
GuatemalaIntercontinental Real Guatemala
PanamaIntercontinental Miramar Panama

Intercontinental Romania
The Intercontinental Bucharest typically requires 25,000 IHG Rewards points per night

Disappointing to not see better hotels included, but at the end of the day paying just $35 a night for hotels is certainly not a bad deal.

As a reminder, IHG Rewards Club did update their PointBreaks terms (in a very reasonable way, in my opinion), earlier in the year to add the following:

Due to the limited availability, each member may only book two PointBreaks® Reward Nights reservations per hotel during the special offer time period.

So while in the past a lot of people would just book dozens of separate reservations at a hotel and later decide which dates they wanted, now you’re more limited in what you can book. So you may want to look at your calendar before the list comes out next week.

I’ll post an update on Monday once the promotion is live, along with a full list of the participating properties!

  1. There’s also an IHG points buying promo going on as well – 60% bonus on purchased IHG points. It think it’s targeted to Platinum members. Here’s the text I got –

“As a valued IHG® Rewards Club Platinum Elite Member, we invite you to take advantage of this special offer when you purchase points today. Receive 60% more points when you purchase a minimum of 10,000 IHG® Rewards Club points between now and August 18, 2014.

Remember, your points can be redeemed for Reward Nights whenever you want, or they can be redeemed for flights, car rentals, merchandise and more.”

Assuming your standard Intercontinental redemption is 50K points, you would need to buy 34K in points to earn the 50K at a cost of $391 or about 0.77 cents/point. Using this promo with the new PointsBreak might create some nice opportunities for some cheap scores.

  2. Outside the US when on business I stay at both Intercontinentals and Crowne Plazas in a number of countries where competitor chains are nonexistent or too high for my company cap. Intercontinentals are fine but usually really bland and unless you pony up for Ambassador status, IHG Platinum status typically only gets almost imperceptible room upgrades. In contrast, many non-US Crowne Plazas are quite nice and give big upgrades, lounge access, breakfast and various other benefits, like several pieces of free laundry each day in Johannesburg.
