The Chase Freedom is one of the most lucrative no annual fee credit cards out there. For a limited time, Chase is even offering an increased sign-up bonus on it:

  • Earn a $200 Bonus after you spend $500 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening
  • Earn a $25 Bonus after you add your first authorized user and make a purchase within this same 3-month period

Chase Freedom’s 5% cash back categories

What makes this card so great is that each quarter they have a different category where you earn 5% cash back. You earn the 5% cash back on up to $1,500 of spend in the bonus categories each quarter. Below is the 5% calendar for 2014:

Register now for quarter three bonus category

Chase has now opened registration for next quarter’s 5% cash back category, which will stay open through September 14, 2014.

Next quarter’s 5% cash back bonus categories are:

  • Gas stations
  • Kohl’s

Given that I live in hotels full time and don’t have a car, I can’t say that this is the most useful quarter for me, personally. But I’ll still try to find a way to maximize it!

Earn 5% cash back on restaurants and Lowe’s through the end of June

As a reminder, assuming you registered you can still earn 5% cash back at restaurants and Lowe’s through June 30. Personally I find it to be the most lucrative bonus category of the year, since I spend quite a bit on dining.

You can convert cash back into Ultimate Rewards points

Just to recap, you earn points on the Chase Freedom®, and each point can be redeemed for one cent cash back. In other words, the sign up bonus offers 20,000 points after making $500 of purchases in the first three months, and an additional 2,500 points after adding an authorized user and having them make a purchase within three months, for a total of 22,500 points.

However, if you have this card in addition to one of the cards that accrue “premium” Ultimate Rewards points, you can transfer these points to Ultimate Rewards. Cards that accrue “premium” Ultimate Rewards Cards include the:

So 5% cash back converts into 5x Ultimate Rewards points per dollar with one of the above cards.

Bottom line

Registering for the 5% cash back category should just take a few seconds, so do it sooner rather than later. And if you don’t have a Chase Freedom… well, why not?

  1. I swear you just did this post. Am I going crazy or has your site gotten more TPG MMS level spammy

  2. @ Stvr — I posted about it being the last couple of days to register for the second quarter bonus, which was extremely lucrative, since the deadline was Saturday. Now I’m posting about the third quarter bonus registration opening. That’s the last you’ll hear of registration opening/closing till September. 🙂
