Chase Freedom’s 5% cash back categories
What makes this card so great is that each quarter they have a different category where you earn 5% cash back. You earn the 5% cash back on up to $1,500 of spend in the bonus categories each quarter.
Last chance to register for this quarter’s 5% cash back category
This quarter’s 5% bonus category is restaurants and Lowe’s, which I’d argue is the most lucrative bonus category of the year. At least that’s the case for me, since I spend a good amount on dining.
In order to engage cardmembers, Chase requires you to register for the bonus each quarter, and the registration for this quarter’s 5% cash back category closes tomorrow, June 14, 2014. So if you haven’t yet registered to earn 5% cash back in those categories, be sure to do so ASAP.
I already usually get a great return on dining with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, which offers 2 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar on dining, though this is more than twice as good.
You can convert cash back into Ultimate Rewards points
In reality, you earn points on the Chase Freedom®, and each point can be redeemed for one cent cash back. In other words, the sign up bonus offers 20,000 points after making $500 of purchases in the first three months, and an additional 2,500 points after adding an authorized user and having them make a purchase within three months, for a total of 22,500 points.
However, if you have this card in addition to one of the cards that accrue “premium” Ultimate Rewards points, you can transfer these points to Ultimate Rewards. Cards that accrue “premium” Ultimate Rewards Cards include the:
So 5% cash back converts into 5x Ultimate Rewards points per dollar with one of the above cards.
First of all, make sure that you’re registered for the second quarter 5% cash back category. Second of all, be sure you’re doing what you can to maximize it. If you wouldn’t naturally reach the $1,500 quarterly bonus maximum, I’d consider buying gift cards to restaurants you frequent if you’re in a position to do so.
