US Airways February Offer – 100% Bonus on Purchased Miles for Cardholders

US Airways launched a targeted offer today, offering a 100% bonus on purchased miles to those who have a US Airways co-branded credit card.

US Airways Bonus Miles

While this promotion is only available to cardholders, it’s better than the December offer, as you will receive the 100% bonus on any quantity of miles you purchase. However, the requirement to use a US Airways credit card is a bit of a downer – those are cards I typically recommend picking up for the signup bonus alone, as they’re not particularly rewarding for “everyday” spend.

Last year US Airways ran a 100% bonus on shared miles, which was a much better deal since it was basically an opportunity to pick up miles for ~1.1 cents each. The “catch” is that you needed an existing mileage balance in order to share miles, so if you didn’t have miles in any US Airways account that wasn’t especially useful. We’ve seen two such 100% share miles promotions in the past several months, which is more than normal, so my guess is that this will be as good as it gets for a while.

Anyway, 1.88 cents per mile isn’t a rate at which I’d speculatively buy miles, but if you have a specific use in mind it can still be a very good deal. US Airways charges just 90,000 miles for business class between the US and North Asia, and you can route via Europe with a stopover there. It’s anyone’s guess how much longer till they devalue their award chart, but spending under $1,900 to get enough miles for such a ticket is a bargain, assuming you can lock it in soon.

Keep in mind that US Airways is exiting the Star Alliance in March, so there is a limited timeframe in which you can use US Airways miles on those carriers. Afterwards US Airways will be joining OneWorld, and will eventually have a combined award chart with American, though we don’t have the details on that yet.

As a reminder, US Airways mileage purchases are processed by, so wouldn’t qualify as airfare spend for the purposes of your credit card.

  1. Hi, I bought some miles awhile back with the intention of taking advantage of the 90,000 mile redemption to North Asia on Star Alliance partners. When I called, they said there was absolutely no availability at all between departure dates of 12/15 all the way to the most available date (at the time, it was 12/24). Is that normal? I wonder if somehow Star Alliance partners are not releasing any seats to US Airways? I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas about this. I had originally hoped to fly PHL to TPE or PHL to HKG with a stopover in Taipei sometime between 12/22/14 to 1/10/15(dates flexible within that period). I wonder if others have had the same experience…

  2. Hi Lucky, do you view this promotion any differently given that these US miles will end up being redeemable with AA/OneWorld? Or are you assuming that a devaluation will kick in right around the time that you’ll start redeeming on AA?

  3. thanks Lucky for the info and the tutorial! I can now see why when I asked about availability on 12/15, the agent said no even though it was technically in the bookable time window!

  4. @ Pete B — Maybe I’m overly cautious, but I’m not really viewing this as an opportunity to purchase American miles. While US Airways miles will be redeemable for OneWorld flights as of March 31, we don’t know at which redemption rates and under which rules, so I’m a bit cautious there.

  5. Hi Lucky, Just want to drop a note to say thank you. I booked my massive Asia flights today using the tutorial and then I used HKG as a hub to tack on travel to SE Asia using avios. After sorting through my color-coded spreadsheet of availability and after the US Airways agent sighed with relief when I fed her the flight segments, it was clear that this trip would not have been possible without blogs like yours. THANK YOU!!

  6. Does anyone have trouble calling to the US Airways reservation line? I have been trying to call since yesterday to book 2 award tickets but kept getting message to call back later due to the current weather condition and the agents are not available to assist with reservation??
