British Airways Reward Flight Saver Sale

Last Monday I wrote about British Airways’ Avios 12 day sale, which they’re running through January 17, 2014. Through this promotion they’re offering a variety of deals which only last a couple of days each. For the most part these deals aren’t exiting for the savvy traveler, given that most of the deals revolve around non-optimal redemptions. For example, they kicked off the promotion with 50% off economy Avios tickets between select longhaul markets, which wasn’t exactly lucrative since British Airways imposes massive fuel surcharges on award redemptions. So in almost all cases it wasn’t a good deal even when factoring in the 50% rebate in Avios required.

Anyway, right now British Airways is running the deal that I consider to be the best value of the promotion. Within Europe British Airways offers “Reward Flight Saver” awards. What this means is that instead of charging the normal taxes, fees, and fuel surcharges for intra-Europe Avios tickets (which usually make up 95% of the revenue ticket cost), they’ll only charge the Avios required plus a fixed amount of cash. As of last July the cash co-pay for a roundtrip Reward Flight Saver award is £35.

Through 11:59AM GMT on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, they’re reducing the cash co-pay for intra-Europe Reward Flight saver awards to just £1 for a roundtrip. The catch is that this is only available in economy for travel completed by May 31, 2014. Furthermore, it’s only valid from London Heathrow to the following cities:

  • Amsterdam
  • Barcelona
  • Dublin
  • Jersey
  • Lisbon
  • Madrid
  • Nice
  • Rome

The discount will automatically show when you search award space. For example, I pulled up availability for London to Amsterdam:

As you can see, the reduced fees are reflected in the total:

Meanwhile if I search the same route outside of the promotion period, the cash co-pay is instead $55:

This is quite a good value for anyone needing to book intra-Europe travel, assuming the routes and dates work for you.

(Tip of the hat to Ghetto IFE)

  1. Perfect timing for my wife and I, as we’re going to be in London later this month and were looking for a way to get to Rome for a few days before returning to the states. Just booked LHR-FCO one way for 15000 Avios and $2 for the two of us. Thanks for the heads up, Lucky!

  2. Do you have to currently have Avios points in your account for the promotional rates to display? I don’t want to transfer Ultimate Rewards points until I know I can get the flight I want, but I’m not seeing the the fees waived. Same flight (LHR-Amsterdam) shows me fees of $170.

  3. @ David — It sounds to me like it’s showing the “Cash + Avios” rate, whereby they basically sell you some Avios at check-out because you don’t have enough. If you see the flights and they conform to the T&Cs then they will qualify.

  4. A bit off-topic: If I book an economy award on AA using Avios and pay the $5.00 fee with my CitiAdvantage AMEX Visa will that qualify me for 1 free checked bag? I have no status with AA or BA.
