Targeted 100% bonus on purchased US Airways miles through January 31, 2013

Through January 31, 2013, US Airways is offering a 100% bonus on the purchase of Dividend Miles to those that purchased miles with them in 2012.

Through this promotion miles can be purchased for ~1.88 cents each including tax. You can purchase a maximum of 100,000 miles through this promotion (50,000 base miles and then 50,000 bonus miles).

This can be a great deal if you have a specific mileage redemption in mind, and can be an even better deal if you’re just topping off a mileage account. Flying from the US to North Asia via Europe costs just 90,000 miles in business class, so if you outright buy those miles through this promotion you’ll pay $1,700, which is really good. See this post for basics on redeeming Dividend Miles.

  1. So here’s a question… I’m in the early stages of planning a trip to Thailand late this year or early 2014. I currently have 90k US Air miles, so I could just book the trip right now (to North Asia and purchase to BKK) and be done with it. But with this deal, there’s the possibility of a) buying 30,000 miles (15 + 15 bonus) to get all the way to BKK, or to fly to North Asia in First, or b) buying another 90,000 and bringing along a friend.

It seems like US Air has sales like this every other month, and there’s always talk about the award chart being devalued so I am skeptical about buying miles for a trip that’s still 9+ months out, but I’m 95% sure the trip is going to happen.

  2. @ Chris — On the whole I think Star Alliance has better business class options to Asia than first class, especially when you factor in US Airways blocking Lufthansa.

Is it worth buying miles through this promotion? If you want to bring along a friend or fly to South Asia I’d definitely say so. But I’d pass for the purpose of trying to book first class, unless that’s something you *really* want to do.

  3. I might jump on this if AA and US Airways announce a merger before this offer expires. I need some AA miles.

  4. @ Tom — This is a targeted promotion, so if you didn’t purchase miles from them last year you’re probably not eligible.
