Double dip with Singapore Airlines/Virgin America, and earn status miles for award tickets on Virgin Australia!

There are two interesting promotions that were just announced, neither of which are especially useful unfortunately. That’s why I’ll group them together.

Double dip with Singapore Airlines and Virgin America

Singapore Airlines and Virgin America have started codesharing, which is an interesting partnership given that Virgin America has a lot of route overlap with United, another one of Singapore’s partners. To celebrate the codesharing they’re offering passengers booked on a Singapore Airlines codeshare on Virgin America the ability to earn both KrisFlyer miles and Elevate points for a single flight.

The promotion runs through February 28, 2013, and registration is required here. The issue, as you might imagine, is that you can only book a Singapore Airlines codeshare on Virgin America in connection with a flight on Singapore Airlines. So this is only useful if you’re flying from San Diego to San Francisco to Hong Kong, and not if you’re just flying from San Diego to San Francisco.

So while it isn’t really useful, it is pretty novel/cool of an airline to say “hey, we’re partners, earn miles/points with both of us!” Too bad they’re just allowing double dipping on the Virgin America segments and not the Singapore segments.

Earn status miles for award travel on Virgin Australia

From January 13 till June 30, 2013, Virgin Australia is offering status miles in their Velocity mileage program even for saver award travel. It’s worth noting that these are only status miles and not redeemable miles they’re awarding.

The Australian Business Traveller article says the following:

To be eligible for this offer, members must book and travel on a Virgin Australia (VA) marketed and operated flight in a Reward Seat Fare Class (X, P or Z) between 13 January and 30 June 2013.

Those are the same fare classes Delta uses for award tickets on Virgin Australia, so it’s not clear to me whether those bookings would qualify or not. That being said it doesn’t really matter to me since I don’t have much interest in going for status with Virgin Australia.

While the promotion only runs through June 30 for saver reward seats, those booked on standard/anytime awards will earn status miles on award reservations on an ongoing basis.

So while neither promotion is especially useful, I do love how innovative they are.

  1. Nice find…if only I was doing this, would be a great way to get some easy Krisflyer miles to combine with AmEx MR trasnferred KF miles.
