Lufthansa’s 50,000 mile sign-up bonus for US Mastercard

The huge sign-up bonuses just keep on coming. Lufthansa is offering up to 50,000 Miles & More miles as a sign-up bonus for their Premier World Mastercard. You earn 20,000 miles after your first purchase and then another 30,000 miles after spending $2,500 within 90 days of having the card.

The card comes with a $79 annual fee, which is not waived the first year.

While a 50,000 mile sign-up bonus is nice, I won’t be taking advantage of the offer, as there are better cards out there I haven’t signed up for yet. It’s worth keeping in mind that Lufthansa imposes fuel surcharges on award tickets, so while this is almost enough miles for a one-way business class award from the US to Europe, you will pay a couple of hundred dollars in fuel surcharges, plus taxes.

(Tip of the hat to Gary)

  1. Lucky, curious as to what the “better cards out there” that you mention that you haven’t signed up for yet? Thanks!

  2. I recommend staying away from this “offer” — because many people (including myself) get switched automatically and without a clear indication to the “Platinum” which is a 5000 (not 50,000) sign-up bonus and a half a mile per dollar spent!

Lufthansa seems to be doing a great job at trashing trust here. Talk about a consumer fail. If for whatever reason you don’t want to give people a product they are signing up for — tell them and let them cancel the transaction.

  3. Tried calling the number in July 2012. Now just offering the generic 20K in miles for signing bonus.
