Weekly Review (And Spring Cleaning At OMAAT)

keukenhof-gardens-tulips

Happy Saturday!

Before we get into the weekly review, I wanted to let y’all know about some changes that will be happening to the blog this weekend.
We’re implementing a bunch of new technology on the back-end of the site, in addition to refreshing the blog with a fresher look and feel that is hopefully more user-friendly.

Think of it like Spring Cleaning. Maybe combined with a kitchen remodel.

United-A320

On the travel front it has been a slow week for me, as I’ve spent most of my time on the ground in the US getting caught up on stuff. However, I have a crazy few weeks of travel coming up, which I’m excited to share the details of shortly.

There’s no doubt the biggest story of the week has been United’s “dragging” incident, which went more viral than I think anyone could have anticipated. On top of that we’ve seen the Daily Getaways promotion for 2017 launched this week, another airline cut service to Cuba, a leaked seatmap for Singapore’s new A380 Suites Class, and more.

With that out of the way, here’s a recap of this week on the blog:

Airplane-View

After some crazy international travel last week, I’ve spent this week hopping around the US, including visiting my parents in Florida. I’m not doing much flying next week, and then have a cool surprise trip the week after, which I’m excited to write about.

On the blog front, we’ve seen some great business class fares this week, the SPG Amex 35,000 point sign-up bonus ended, and we’ve seen some other continued strong hotel credit card sign-up bonuses.

Here’s a recap of this week on the blog:

Polaris

This was a crazy travel week for me, as I flew roundtrip from San Francisco to Hong Kong with just a four hour layover in Hong Kong, in order to be able to review United’s new Polaris product. I thought the trip would be exhausting, but it actually wasn’t. Even though I didn’t get much sleep on either of the flights, I’ve gotten three great nights of sleep since I returned. Ultimately I find exhaustion much easier to deal with than jetlag, so I’m happy I planned the trip the way I did.

Over the coming week I’ll be traveling domestically, given how many trip reports I have to catch up on.

As far as news and updates this week go, I think the highlight of the week was United’s leggings fiasco, as well as the Amex Platinum Card being relaunched.

Bhutan-1

Last weekend I returned to the US after a two week trip to Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Kuwait, so have been spending the past week on the ground catching up on sleep, given that I typically don’t get all that much rest when traveling to Asia. I also plan on publishing the trip report from this trip very shortly. Fortunately I’m now all caught up on sleep, and am plotting my next adventure.

On the travel front, the biggest story of the week has been about the electronics ban, which will potentially have a huge impact on many peoples’ travel. Other than that we’ve seen increased sign-up bonuses introduced on the Amex Hilton, some great business class fares to Paris, and more.

With that out of the way, here’s a recap of this week on the blog:

Wing

I just wrapped up a great four country trip earlier today, where I visited Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Kuwait. The trip was incredible — especially Bhutan — and I was happy to try some new airline products. I’m hopping around North America for the next couple of weeks, so am looking forward to being on a consistent schedule for a while, and hopefully catching up on sleep. I’m undecided as of now about what my next longhaul adventure will be, but I’m sure I’ll decide soon.

On the miles & points front this has been a fairly slow week. We saw some good airfare and also a few promotions, but nothing terribly exciting. More than that we’ve seen some minor updates, like Etihad changing where they’re operating the A380 to, Marriott and United introducing reciprocal benefits for invitation only elite members, etc.

With that out of the way, here’s a recap of this week on the blog:

Bhutan-12

Hello from Bhutan! As I’ve already explained, we’re having an incredible time here. This place is unlike anywhere I’ve been. While the snow for the past 24 hours has been beautiful, I’m hoping conditions clear up so we can do some hiking.

On the airline front this has been an exciting week as well, as Qatar Airways finally revealed their much awaited new business class product. We’ve also seen some great airfares, continued challenges for Alitalia, Airbus pondering a new version of the A380, and much more.

Philippine-Airlines-777-Business-Class - 2

On Wednesday I wrapped up a crazy, three week round the world trip, ending with a Philippine Airlines reverse redeye from New York to Vancouver. After largely hibernating for the past few days, I’m now getting ready for my next big adventure, so stay tuned.

On the news front this has also been an interesting week. World of Hyatt finally went “live,” as did Hilton’s new Points & Money awards. On top of that, we learned about changes coming to the Amex Platinum Card, and also saw quite a deal from British Airways for joining dating websites, which has been more of an adventure than many of us bargained for.

Qatar-Airways-First

Hello from Paris, after flying Qatar Airways here from Doha! I’m just finishing up a crazy trip that has spanned most of February, and am spending this weekend in Paris. As I reflect on my travels, I realize that it has been about a decade since I’ve last spent more than a layover in Paris. It’s a city I don’t love (unlike just about everyone else in the world) based on memory, though I’m curious how I feel about it this time around. On the plus side, the weather is gorgeous.

On the miles & points front we’ve seen a few cool promotions this week, including with the SPG Amex, American Business Extra, an extra bonus on purchased LifeMiles, and much more. It has been an especially crazy couple of weeks of travel for me, so I’ve also been writing about that.

Camel

This has been an absolutely insane travel week for me, as I’ve been in Bali, London, and Abu Dhabi so far this week, with more to come. I’ll have lots more details on that soon, though in the meantime it’s time to catch up on sleep. šŸ˜‰

On the miles & points front it has been an exciting week. We’ve seen the return of the SPG Amex 35K sign-up bonus, LifeMiles introduce a bonus on purchased miles, Cathay Pacific introduce a credit card in the U.S., and much more.

Bali

Hello from Bali! I’m presently on an extended round the world trip for something fun I’m working on, which I’m excited to reveal the details of soon. I’m here for a few days, and I’m actually not sure where exactly I’m headed next. Then again, that’s not entirely unusual for my travel patterns.

In the miles & points/travel world, we saw the world’s longest flight launched this week, and have even seen some great business class on that flight, especially when starting in Europe. I’ve also been trying to figure out a way to fly Air France first class, so that has been another one of my focuses. This week we’ve seen Marriott and Starwood announce hotel category changes, more hotel promotions, Copa start selling miles, Priority Pass add some great new lounges, and more.

Deer-Valley

I’m spending this weekend in Deer Valley, which is beyond gorgeous. While I love how snow looks, I’m not a fan of cold temperatures, so I’m primarily enjoying this beautiful setting from inside. Furthermore, if there’s one thing I learned in Dubai, it’s that I can’t ski. Nonetheless I’m having an amazing time, and this is the most gorgeous snow I’ve seen in years.

On the miles & points front we saw major changes to Hilton’s loyalty program, bonuses on purchased miles, extended credit card offers, and a lot of uncertainty in the light of recent U.S. policy changes.

Mexico

I’m back in the U.S. after spending a lovely long weekend in Mexico. I’m taking a brief longhaul travel break, as I want to get caught up on trip reports. That includes finishing the big trip report I’m writing at the moment, and also writing the report about my trip to Cambodia and Laos last October, which is long overdue.

On the miles & points front we’ve learned more about the growth of basic economy at U.S. airlines, about management changes at Etihad, and we’ve seen some new hotel and credit card promotions.

Here’s a recap of this week on the blog:

Mexico

I’m spending a few days in Mexico, and perhaps shockingly, it’s my first time visiting here as an adult (other than connecting through Mexico City Airport). This has made me reflect on my travels in a surprising way, so I’ll have a separate post about that. In the past I’ve always traveled halfway around the world to relax, so this has been an interesting contrast to that.

On the travel and points front, we’ve seen quite a few updates this week, including more information on American’s basic economy fares, Starwood and Uber devaluing their partnership, as well as some great promos.

With that out of the way, here’s a recap of this week on the blog:
