Weekly Review: February 18, 2017

This has been an absolutely insane travel week for me, as I’ve been in Bali, London, and Abu Dhabi so far this week, with more to come. I’ll have lots more details on that soon, though in the meantime it’s time to catch up on sleep. čśë

On the miles & points front it has been an exciting week. We’ve seen the return of the SPG Amex 35K sign-up bonus, LifeMiles introduce a bonus on purchased miles, Cathay Pacific introduce a credit card in the U.S., and much more.

With that out of the way, here’s a recap of this week on the blog:

Hello from Bali! I’m presently on an extended round the world trip for something fun I’m working on, which I’m excited to reveal the details of soon. I’m here for a few days, and I’m actually not sure where exactly I’m headed next. Then again, that’s not entirely unusual for my travel patterns.

In the miles & points/travel world, we saw the world’s longest flight launched this week, and have even seen some great business class on that flight, especially when starting in Europe. I’ve also been trying to figure out a way to fly Air France first class, so that has been another one of my focuses. This week we’ve seen Marriott and Starwood announce hotel category changes, more hotel promotions, Copa start selling miles, Priority Pass add some great new lounges, and more.

With that out of the way, here’s a recap of this week on the blog:

I’m spending this weekend in Deer Valley, which is beyond gorgeous. While I love how snow looks, I’m not a fan of cold temperatures, so I’m primarily enjoying this beautiful setting from inside. Furthermore, if there’s one thing I learned in Dubai, it’s that I can’t ski. Nonetheless I’m having an amazing time, and this is the most gorgeous snow I’ve seen in years.

On the miles & points front we saw major changes to Hilton’s loyalty program, bonuses on purchased miles, extended credit card offers, and a lot of uncertainty in the light of recent U.S. policy changes.

With that out of the way, here’s a recap of this week on the blog:

I’m back in the U.S. after spending a lovely long weekend in Mexico. I’m taking a brief longhaul travel break, as I want to get caught up on trip reports. That includes finishing the big trip report I’m writing at the moment, and also writing the report about my trip to Cambodia and Laos last October, which is long overdue.

On the miles & points front we’ve learned more about the growth of basic economy at U.S. airlines, about management changes at Etihad, and we’ve seen some new hotel and credit card promotions.

Here’s a recap of this week on the blog:

Weekly Review: January 21, 2017

I’m spending a few days in Mexico, and perhaps shockingly, it’s my first time visiting here as an adult (other than connecting through Mexico City Airport). This has made me reflect on my travels in a surprising way, so I’ll have a separate post about that. In the past I’ve always traveled halfway around the world to relax, so this has been an interesting contrast to that.

On the travel and points front, we’ve seen quite a few updates this week, including more information on American’s basic economy fares, Starwood and Uber devaluing their partnership, as well as some great promos.

With that out of the way, here’s a recap of this week on the blog:

Weekly Review: January 14, 2017

On Tuesday I wrapped up a crazy whirlwind trip to Jordan, Brunei, and the UAE, which had me flying Air Canada, EgyptAir, Royal Jordanian, Royal Brunei, and Emirates. As much as I love these types of trips, they also make me seriously exhausted, so I’ve spent the past few days on the ground recovering and catching up on sleep. Most of my travel over the next couple of weeks is domestic, which should be a good opportunity to get fully caught up on trip reports.

On the blog front, a lot of the content this week has been recapping my travels. We’ve also seen some great airfare deals, in particular with Qatar Airways’ global travel sale, which is still going on. There are some incredible values to be had through that. We’ve also seen some increased credit card sign-up bonuses end, some new sign-up bonuses emerge, and the deadlines for others approaching.

With that out of the way, here’s a recap of this week on the blog:

Hello from Brunei! I’ve spent much of the week on planes, as I’m presently in the middle of a crazy trip I’m taking to review a bunch of new airlines. It’s my first time in Brunei, and so far I’m having a great time. I’ll have more of my thoughts on Brunei in a follow-up post, along with thoughts on my flight over here on Royal Brunei.

On the miles and points front it has been pretty typical for the first week of the year. We’ve seen some promos, I’ve posted typical beginning of the year reminders, and primarily I’ve spent the week focused on getting some trip reports done, so hopefully you guys have enjoyed those installments.

Weekly Review: December 31, 2016

I just returned from a two day trip to Cuba, and boy do I have a lot to write about. For now I’ll keep it short, as I’ve had the most exhausting travel day I’ve had in a long time, and I only flew a couple of hundred miles. Let me just say that spending nearly seven hours at Havana Airport is not fun — more to come soon.

On the miles & points front it was a fairly slow week, as is the norm between Christmas and New Years, since not a whole lot happens. We did see some great fares and it was a week where I planned my first big trip for 2017, which I’m excited about.

Thanks so much to everyone for their support in 2016, and I can’t wait for 2017. Stay tuned, as I have a lot of content coming tomorrow!

I’m spending this week with my family down in Florida. I’m thrilled to be able to spend quality time with them, and it’s actually turning out to be a great opportunity to plan some trips with both my mom and dad. I did a fair amount of domestic flying this past week, which turned out to be a big mistake, though I should have known better than to travel as much as I did the week leading up to Christmas. Hopefully everyone else’s travels leading up to the holidays went smoothly so far.

On the miles & points front it has been a fairly slow week, except for two things:

— The Garuda Indonesia 90% off award promotion debacle
— The changes to Alaska Mileage Plan — both them cutting ties with Delta, and also the new benefits they’ve added to their program

We’ve spent the past week in Germany and Austria enjoying Christmas markets and tolerating weather that was about 50 degrees too cold for my liking. čśë Nonetheless we had a great time, and there is something so beautiful about European Christmas markets. I actually didn’t mind the weather all that much in Europe, while the weather in Boston on Thursday was truly inhumane. I’m recovering for a couple of days before spending the rest of the year in Florida to see my family.

On the miles & points front, we’ve seen a lot of great holiday offers this week, especially for earning bonus miles on shopping. Furthermore, there’s a special offer from LifeMiles for OMAAT readers, which couples very nicely with the discount they have on select redemptions. On top of that, the merger between Alaska and Virgin America closed this week, so I’ll be very curious to see what the combined airline will look like going forward.

With that out of the way, here’s a recap of this week on the blog:

Weekly Review: December 10, 2016

This has been a really fun travel week for me, as I’ve spent the past few days on Garuda Indonesia and in Jakarta. I’ve wanted to try Garuda Indonesia first class for a long time, and that opportunity finally presented itself with a recent fare sale they had. I’m so happy I had the chance to try them, as their first class product is now possibly my favorite in the world. I’ll have much more detailed trip reports about my experience coming shortly. Today I flew back from Jakarta to Singapore to London, so as an aviation geek, Saturdays don’t get more fun than this!

On the miles & points/airline/hotel front it has been an eventful week as well. Alaska finally got the go ahead to proceed with their Virgin America takeover, Alaska miles can now be redeemed on Japan Airlines (and those redemptions are an exceptional value), United announced their first 777-300ER routes, and we’ve continued to see lots of great promos, including on the credit card front.

Here’s a recap of this week’s news:

While I had intended to fly less for the remainder of the year and bounce around the U.S., unfortunately that’s not happening. Instead I’m headed to Europe today with Ford to enjoy some Christmas markets. I’m not sure what exactly I’m thinking here, because I love the idea of Christmas markets (and have been to them many times), but have zero tolerance for cold weather. So this should be an interesting adventure…

On the miles & points/travel front we’ve seen some airline promotions, some good credit card offers, and the introduction of United Polaris. Other than that it has been a pretty quiet week.

With that in mind, here’s a recap of this week’s stories:

Weekly Review: November 26, 2016

Given that it was a holiday week, I spent the week in Florida visiting my family. Thanksgiving was also my dad’s birthday, so while it wasn’t quite as exciting as the trip I took with my dad two years ago for his “round” birthday, I had a great time with my family nonetheless. This also presented some great mattress run opportunities, as hotels in Tampa were extra cheap this week, so I switched around between several hotels to maximize promotions.

On the miles & points front, it was a pretty typical holiday week. That’s to say that we saw quite a few Cyber Week/Black Friday promos, though there wasn’t much in the way of news otherwise, given that not many decisions are made this week on the corporate level. However, with the end of the year upon us, and the new year not far away, I’m sure there will be a lot of exciting developments soon.

Now here’s a recap of the blog for the week:

Weekly Review: November 19, 2016

This week I wrapped up my last crazy trip of the year, at least based on what I have planned as of now. While I’ve loved all the airlines I’ve had the opportunity to try, I’m also tired, so I’ve been recovering in the US since then, and plan to stay in the US for the coming weeks. Last night I took my first domestic redeye in a long time, which ended up being quite an exciting experience — I’ll share the details of that tomorrow.

On the miles & points front, we’ve seen quite a few promotions and sales this week, though nothing too exciting. With Thanksgiving next week, I’m looking forward to all the Cyber Monday sales we often see for hotels and flights.

Here’s a recap of this week’s news:
