LOT Polish Business Class Awards To/From LAX Readily Available!

LOT-Business-Class-787-76

Yesterday I posted about how LOT Polish will be launching flights between Warsaw and Los Angeles as of April 2017. This represents the third Star Alliance airline to start transatlantic service to Los Angeles within a year, with SAS having launched flights to Stockholm a few months ago, and Austrian launching flights to Vienna next April.

Well, the new LOT Polish flight between Los Angeles and Warsaw is now bookable. As of April 3, 2017, LOT Polish will fly 4x weekly between Warsaw and Los Angeles using a Boeing 787-8 aircraft.

Per routesonline.com, the flight will operate with alternating schedules depending on the day of the week in order to maximize aircraft utilization:

LOT Polish Launching Flights Between Los Angeles & Warsaw

LOT-Business-Class-787-05

Man, the Star Alliance transatlantic growth at LAX continues! Earlier this year SAS launched flights between Los Angeles and Stockholm, next April Austrian will launch flights between Los Angeles and Vienna, and now another airline is joining the club.

Via ETN, LOT Polish plans to launch flights between Warsaw and Los Angeles as of early April 2017. This will be the very first direct flight between California and Central-Eastern Europe. At just over 6,000 miles each way, this will be quite a haul.

LOT Polish has an all-Boeing 787 longhaul fleet — thank goodness, because their old 767s were beat up. At the moment they have six of these, though they have two more on order, so I imagine those additional planes will be used for this new route, since their current planes are pretty well utilized already.

LOT Polish Adds Mistletoe To Their Planes

LOT-Business-Class-787-02

Here’s a simple but cute idea. Through January 6, 2015, LOT Polish is hanging a mistletoe on each of their airplanes.

Here’s the press release:

“LOT Polish Airlines has kicked off the Christmas holidays with KISSaLOT. Mistletoe twigs have been hung in each of LOT’s aircraft–the highest place in the world–through Jan. 6, 2015. It’s the airline’s way of bringing people together.”

LOT Polish Award Space Now On United.com

LOT-Business-Class-787-07

In a way there’s an inverse correlation between award availability and the ease of searching that space online. In other words, as much as I appreciate when airlines make it easy to book award tickets online, it also means there’s a lot more competition for those seats.

For example, American lets you book many of their partner airlines directly through their website, but not Cathay Pacific. As annoying as it is to have to call to book, I actually prefer it that way, because it means there’s less competition for those seats.

United has a fairly comprehensive website when it comes to displaying partner airline award space, though historically they haven’t displayed Brussels Airlines and LOT Polish award space. These two airlines also happen to have extremely good award space, so I don’t think it’s unreasonable to assume that’s at least partly due to the fact that it’s not bookable through United’s website.

Review: LOT Polish Business Class ERJ-170 Warsaw To Zurich

LOT-Business-Class-02

We boarded shortly after 7:30AM, and I quickly took my seat, 2A.

There was no row one on the left side of the aircraft, so it was actually a bulkhead seat, though a very spacious one at that. For those of you not familiar with intra-Europe business class, it’s ordinarily just economy class with a blocked middle seat and better food and service. That allows the airlines a lot of flexibility, since they can adjust the size of the business class cabins with each flight.

The advantage of these Embraer jets is that since they’re in a 2-2 configuration, they just block the aisle seat, so you really have the set of two seats to yourself.

Review: LOT Polish Business Class Lounge Warsaw

LOT-Polish-Lounge-Warsaw-Airport-13

We left the hotel at 5:30AM for our 7:40AM departure out of Warsaw Airport. While that’s earlier than I’d usually leave, we were heading to China on a 72 hour transit without visa, so I wanted to be sure we were leaving a bit extra time just to be on the safe side.

We arrived at the airport at around 5:45AM. The exterior looked much blander than the last time I was here. Last January the entire terminal exterior was plastered in a LOT 787 advertisement, which was rather unfortunate given that all of them were grounded at the time.

Review: LOT Polish Business Class 787 New York To Warsaw

LOT-Business-Class-787-07

After my flight on LOT Polish last year from Warsaw to Chicago on one of their older 767s, I was curious to see how their 787 experience compared.

We boarded through door 2L, and upon presenting our boarding passes to the cabin crew, were directed left to the business class cabin. The purser, who was standing at the door, was a lot to take in. She had a bright red uniform, which quite nicely contrasted the “what do you want?” look on her face.

LOT’s business class cabin on the 787 consists of 18 fully flat seats, spread across three rows in a 2-2-2 configuration.

Around the World on 90k Part I: Warsaw and Beijing with Nothing But a Passport and a Dream(liner)

Hopefully my perspective will be a little different from Lucky’s, as someone who’s not quite as accustomed to premium travel as he is.

I think on this trip, Lucky found out that having me along was the equivalent of having 13 black cats for travel companions. Or a member of the Kennedy family. Still, the trip went relatively smoothly, all things considered.

We started off our journey at the Korean Air lounge in JFK’s Terminal 1. As Lucky pointed out, outlets were in short supply, and their internet filters were actually offensive (though this has since been fixed, so kudos for that). Also, the ambient temperature made me long for the relative coolness of the inside of a pizza oven.

Finnair Wet Leasing A LOT 787

While hardly significant in the grand scheme of things given that the arrangement only lasts a week, this is interesting nonetheless: Finnair and LOT Polish Airlines have signed an agreement by which Finnair’s New York route will be operated by one of LOT’s almost brand new Boeing 787 aircraft from December, 27 2013 to January…
