Unbelievable: La Compagnie & XL Airways Are Merging

la-compagnie-757

In late October I wrote about how French all-business class airline La Compagnie was apparently in merger talks with French low cost airline XL Airways. Well, it’s actually happening — an all business class low cost carrier is merging with an all economy class low cost carrier, for an undisclosed amount.

For a bit of context, La Compagnie has two 757s, while XL Airways has five A330s and one 737.

Per Business Insider, here’s what we know about the deal:

GREAT DEAL: Roundtrip Business Class From New York To Paris For $1,000

La-Compagnie-Business-Class-757-03

La Compagnie is the all business class transatlantic airline that started flying in mid-2014. They operate flights between Newark and Paris using Boeing 757 aircraft. I reviewed La Compagnie back when they first launched operations a couple of years ago. They also briefly flew between New York and London, though ended up canceling that route.

While La Compagnie doesn’t have the best business class product, I have to give them credit for offering exceptionally good value. They consistently have roundtrip tickets available for ~$1,500, which is cheaper than you’ll regularly find on any other airline.

If you’re thinking of flying La Compagnie, the airline has just announced a fantastic fare sale. La Compagnie is having a “Blue Friday” sale, with tickets available for ~$1,000 roundtrip.

La Compagnie In Talks To Merge With XL Airways?!?

La-Compagnie-Business-Class-757-03

La Compagnie is the all business class transatlantic airline that started flying in mid-2014. Their first route was between Paris and Newark, and I was able to review that flight within days of when they launched operations. Last summer La Compagnie launched flights between Newark and London as well, which they later ended up canceling.

When the airline started flying I gave them six months until they went out of business. I was wrong, because it just so happened that the cost of oil dropped from $100 per barrel to $50 per barrel shortly after they started flying. Lucky them, eh?

Nonetheless I haven’t been able to figure out their long term goal. They’re all over the place in terms of their growth strategy. Maybe they’ll expand out of New York to Europe. Maybe from the west coast to Asia. They don’t really know. So while I’m sure they can continue to just barely squeeze by and maybe even break even, long term the business model just isn’t materializing, as has been the case with so many business class airlines that came before them.

La Compagnie’s Growth Strategy Is All Over The Place

Their first route was between Paris and Newark, and I was able to review that flight within days of when they launched operations. Last summer La Compagnie launched flights between Newark and London as well.

In March La Compagnie claimed they were breaking even on their Paris route, and were still “ramping up” on their London route (in other words, they weren’t yet breaking even).

Well, early last month La Compagnie announced that they’d be discontinuing their flight between New York and London because of Brexit. Then La Compagnie announced that they’d instead add a second daily flight between New York and Paris. That’s a questionable move, given that they were apparently already only breaking even on the route. By doubling capacity without a corresponding increase in demand, they’re undoubtedly going to lower their yields.

Are La Compagnie’s Days Numbered?

Well, earlier this month La Compagnie announced that they’d be discontinuing their flight between New York and London because of Brexit. That seemed like a convenient excuse, especially since we haven’t seen demand shift very much in the short term. If anything, you’d think La Compagnie would thrive under those conditions, given that the route was largely targeted at New Yorkers looking to go to London.

Now On Sale: Unlimited Business Class Flying On La Compagnie

La-Compagnie-Business-Class-757-03

As I first wrote about several weeks ago, La Compagnie is offering a one year “all you can fly” business class pass. The pass is on sale as of today, and is supposedly only available for up to 10 people. As a reminder, La Compagnie is the French all business class airline that operates flights between New York and Paris as well as New York and London.

Exclusively between July 21 and July 30, La Compagnie is selling unlimited flying on them for a year at the cost of $35,000. The pass is only valid for the first 10 people who purchase it, and you can start the process of purchasing a pass by calling them at 800-218-6820.

Here’s how they describe the offerings:

To recap the basic details:
— The pass is on sale July 21 through 30, but only to the first 10 buyers
— The pass is good for a year from the date of your first flight, though will expire no later than December 15, 2017
— There are no capacity controls (as long as a seat is available, a pass member can catch a ride)
— You can only reserve up to two roundtrips at a time
— If you don’t cancel more than three hours before a trip and no show, you’ll be charged $2,500
— You earn points in La Compagnie’s loyalty program for flights you take

One Airline Is Selling Unlimited Business Class Flights For A Year

La-Compagnie-Business-Class-757-03

La Compagnie is the all business class transatlantic airline which started flying in mid-2014. Their first route was between Paris and Newark, and I was able to review that flight within days of when they launched operations. Last summer La Compagnie launched flights between Newark and London as well.

There’s no denying that La Compagnie offers exceptional value, as their business class is in many cases priced only marginally more than what other airlines charge for economy. I figured that was just a promotional offer for when they launched, but they’ve stayed consistent, which I commend them for.

At the same time the airline’s business class product is definitely sub-par. Seats are angled, while the industry standard nowadays is for business class seats to be fully flat (at least to London and Paris). But for the price, you really can’t complain.

While the airline is apparently breaking even on their New York to Paris route, they’re still losing money on their New York to London route.

For example, right now La Compagnie is offering $1,600-1,700 roundtrip fares to London and Paris, though just a couple of months ago they had fares of just $1,100 per person.

$1,100 New York To London Business Class Fares

La-Compagnie-Business-Class-16

It has been a while since I’ve written about La Compagnie, the all business class airline flying between New York and London/Paris.

Now that their operations seem to have stabilized quite a bit (unlike when they were flying chartered planes between New York and London, and offering a milk run to serve both of their routes with one plane), I do think it’s worth pointing out some of the great fares they have:

— New York to London for two roundtrip — $2,200
— New York to London for one roundtrip — $1,300
— New York to Paris for two roundtrip — $2,900
— New York to Paris for one roundtrip — $1,600

That New York to London fare in particular is a fantastic deal, at just ~$1,100 per person.

Fly Business Class Between New York And London For $1,250

La-Compagnie-Business-Class-757-03

La Compagnie is the all business class airline operating flights between Newark and Paris, and as of April, flights between Newark and London. The airline launched last July, and has no doubt had some “growing” pains as they ramped up operations, despite being run by two seasoned airline executives.

The way I see it, they offer a sub-par business class product (compared to the other airlines in the market, which mostly offer flat bed products) at truly a fraction of the price. In many cases, La Compagnie business class is priced similarly to the competition’s economy class prices.

With that in mind, La Compagnie once again has a heck of a business class fare sale for travel between New York an London. It’s not quite as good as the sale they had when the route was first announced, but is still very good.

La Compagnie Is Still Canceling Flights To London… Why?

La-Compagnie-Business-Class-52

La Compagnie is the all business class airline operating flights between Newark and Paris, and as of a couple of months ago, flights between Newark and London. The airline launched last July, and no doubt has had some “growing” pains as they ramped up operations, despite being run by two seasoned airline executives.

Unfortunately the operational challenges don’t seem to have become much better since they launched their second route between Newark and London. Due to a combination of late delivery of their second plane and routine maintenance on their first plane, they had some “creative” solutions to operating their schedule:

— On some days they operated a “milk run” between Newark and Paris, whereby they consolidated the two flights and stopped in London
— They leased a Portuguese A340 which used to belong to Emirates, and operated it some days
– On top of all that, they’ve cancelled several frequencies

I spoke to La Compagnie’s Deputy CEO at the time, and he assured me that the airline would operate their Newark to London frequencies 6x weekly as of June 1, 2015.

But unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be the case.

La Compagnie Introduces MyCompagnie Frequent Flyer Program

La-Compagnie-Business-Class-757-03

By now you’re probably aware of French all business class airline La Compagnie, which operates flights between Newark and Paris/London.

La Compagnie has just announced that they’re introducing a loyalty program, called MyCompagnie. And if you register for MyCompagnie by June 30, 2015, you’ll earn a welcome bonus of 10 points. Here’s how they describe the program by email:

“Discover MyCompagnie, our new fidelity program, and cumulate points with every La Compagnie flight you take. These points can quickly add up to tickets on all our routes. The good news: if you activate your account by June, 30th, we will credit you with a welcome bonus of 10 points. What can we say? We’re feeling generous.”

So how does MyCompagnie work?

How Much Longer Will La Compagnie Be Flying An A340?

A340-300-1

On Saturday I wrote about how La Compagnie, the all business class transatlantic airline, mysteriously started flying a chartered Portuguese A340 between Newark and London Luton. They recently launched service between Newark and London, so having passengers show up to the airport only to be flown on an ex-Emirates A340 doesn’t necessarily paint the best impression.

My biggest issue with how La Compagnie was handling this was that they really weren’t communicating with passengers very well. They’d email passengers a day before departure to basically say “hey, you know how you booked with us? Well instead we have an unmarked plane from a Portuguese charter company you’ve never heard of which will be operating the flight for us. Enjoy!”

When you run an airline with two planes, it would seem logical to maybe mention this in social media, explain the range of dates which are impacted, etc.
