Hello Ben! I have a very simple question and I think you never talked about that subject?!? What airline is best for travelling with kids on a longhaul flight? Is it OK to fly first class with younger kids (2&5)? Thanks!

There arent any rules that say you cant put kids in first class with you. However, they will need a separate ticket and first class is rarely cheap, whether its an award or a paid ticket. Personally, I wouldnt bring kids into First Class. Business Class, sure.

I think in general, that’s not the situation Ben is in so it’s hard for him to write about family travel without experiencing it first hand. Maybe try a more family focused site like mommy points?

I have a 1,3 and 5 yo and the youngest is def the toughest. We fly business class a bit including very long haul to Australia and it makes a world of difference if you can (thanks to this site with all its help!! Eg purchasing life miles). My wife has done first class with the youngest on united and Lufthansa. Nice, but you do feel a little conspicuous and you can’t enjoy all the amenities as you are worried about the children. I’d agree with David. Business amazing if you have kids with very little need to go to first.

Hello everyone and thanks for your comments! Let me try to specifify my question and reply to some of your comments. At first I do belive Ben could say something about this even when he has no kids because he probably experienced a lot of flights where other passengers had kids with them! I also looked at the “mommy points” and I am sorry to say that but I can’t see how this site can help me?!? Now let me give you a little bit more details: I want to fly with my whole family 5 adults and 2 children from Germany to Australia. I want to make this trip as smooth as possible! I saw that the major airlines are Ethiad, Emirates and Singapore for that trip! I flew Emirates first and Business without kids! I liked first and Business was OK! I also flew with Singapore first and Business without kids and both werde just OK! But I have never been with Ethiad! So I don’t know which airline I just pick??? And I do belive that there is a huge difference between Business and first!!! (I don’t mean the price). The ground experience is also very Important for me because we definatly have to change planes during our journey! Thanks again for your help!!!

But overall, as someone who [I]doesn’t[/I] have kids, the problem with children on airplanes (or anywhere in public for that matter), is rarely the kids as such. It’s poor or absentee parenting that causes 99.9999999999% of problems.

So with a 5 adult to 2 kid ratio, you should be fine on any airline if you’re planning on actively engaging with your children, setting behavior expectations, etc. If you’re hoping for the airline staff to babysit while you drink, watch movies, and sleep, you (and likely everyone around you) will probably have a miserable flight. Sadly a lot of parents seem to think their ticket price includes childcare, which no airline is really set up for at that level.

Thank you for your answer! And I am looking forward to hear from Travis! Let me say at first that I don’t expect at all any crew member to be a babysitter!!! I am just interested to hear from you guys if any airline have maybe some special ammenties on board for kids? Or is there a nice playroom in the lounge? Is there an airline that is more kidfriendly or maybe one that doesn’t really tolerate them? I flew Singapore Suites on the A380 with my son when he was 2 and I have very mixed memoiries about that!!! I am happy about any experience or advise you share with me!
