LifeMiles Cyber Week Sale: Buy Miles For 1.375 Cents Each

ana-first-class-777-2

LifeMiles just launched their latest promotion on purchased miles, valid through November 28, 2016. They’re marketing this as a Cyber Week bonus, and it is indeed one of the better offers they’ve had in a while.

Through this bonus you can receive a 140% bonus on purchased miles when you buy at least 5,000 miles. While we’ve seen some 140% bonuses in the past, what makes this one special is that you only need to buy 5,000 miles to take advantage of it. In the past there have been 100,000+ mile minimums to get miles at that rate, which translates to several thousand dollars out of pocket. This is the best LifeMiles promotion we’ve seen for those looking to purchase miles in smaller increments.

LifeMiles ordinarily cost 3.3 cents each to purchase, so if you take part in this promotion it’s an opportunity to buy LifeMiles ~1.375 cents each, when factoring in the 140% bonus. For example, you can buy a total of 240,000 miles for $3,300:

Register For Special LifeMiles Credit Card Sign-Up Bonus

lifemiles-credit-card-1

In July LifeMiles announced that they’d introduce a new US credit card. LifeMiles is the frequent flyer program of Avianca, and has generally been a pretty good program for Star Alliance premium cabin award redemptions.

For a while LifeMiles had a credit card issued by US Bank, though it was discontinued. We don’t yet know which bank will issue LifeMiles’ new card, though it’s safe to assume that it won’t be US Bank.

Anyway, while they built a good bit of buzz around the card in July, we haven’t heard much about it since then. Well, it looks like there’s finally a further update. I just received an updated email from LifeMiles about the new card, suggesting that it will be launched within the next few weeks.

SPG Adds Avianca LifeMiles As A Points Transfer Partner

Avianca-787-Business-Class - 7

Starwood Preferred Guest and Avianca LifeMiles have just announced a new partnership. That’s pretty interesting, given that Marriott’s takeover of Starwood is scheduled to be finalized in just over 24 hours (of course SPG won’t disappear overnight, but still, it’s great to see the folks at SPG innovating until the very end).

Through this new partnership, Avianca LifeMiles will be added as one of SPG’s mileage transfer partners, meaning Starpoints can be converted into LifeMiles at a 1:1 ratio, with a 5,000 point bonus for every 20,000 points transferred.

LifeMiles is a useful frequent flyer program for Star Alliance redemptions, and they often sell miles at a discount. For example, at the moment you can buy LifeMiles for as little as ~1.375 cents each. So while they’re a great program for redemptions, I probably wouldn’t transfer points from SPG to LifeMiles when I can otherwise buy them at a reasonable cost.

The Trick To Redeeming LifeMiles For Lufthansa First Class

Lufthansa-First-Class-747 - 1

As I wrote about earlier today, LifeMiles is offering an increased bonus on purchased miles. While they’ve been running a promotion all month, there’s now a way to get a 140% bonus on purchased LifeMiles, which is an opportunity to pick up miles for ~1.375 cents each.

The issue is that LifeMiles doesn’t seem to have access to all Star Alliance award availability. For over a year LifeMiles didn’t have access to any Lufthansa first class award space, though that finally changed late last year, which was a big boost to the value of LifeMiles.

However, over time it seems like LifeMiles doesn’t have access to all Lufthansa first class award availability, which is rather frustrating. However, there’s a workaround to accessing Lufthansa first class award space, as pointed out by Hiro in the comments section of a recent post.

Avianca LifeMiles Increases Their Bonus On Purchased Miles

Asiana-A380-First-Class-077

At the beginning of the month I wrote about how Avianca’s LifeMiles program launched their latest bonus on purchased miles. While the promotion is valid through September 30, 2016, LifeMiles offered an “early bird” bonus, where you could get additional bonus miles if you purchased miles by September 10, 2016.

With the early bird promotion you could purchase miles with up to a 130% bonus.

While that promotion ended a bit over a week ago, there’s now an opportunity to purchase miles with an even better bonus. You can purchase LifeMiles with up to a 140% bonus thanks to a promotion being offered in conjunction with Brazlian blog Passageiro de Primeira (LifeMiles has offered similar promotions in the past).

To take advantage of this offer you have to register on this page between September 19 and September 26, and then have to buy miles between September 20 and September 27, 2016. You have to wait 24 hours from the time you register until you buy miles through the offer to get the better bonus. You should see the better bonus reflected on the purchase page once you’re eligible.

Is LifeMiles Blocking Lufthansa First Class Award Space?

Lufthansa-First-Class-747 - 8

Avianca’s LifeMiles program is one of the most aggressive out there in terms of selling miles at a discount. The program is clearly run in such a way that they’re encouraging people to buy miles at a discount for the purposes of premium cabin redemptions on partner airlines. It’s a great arbitrage opportunity for getting Star Alliance award tickets at a discount. At the moment LifeMiles is even offering up to a 130% bonus on purchased miles.

However, for a long time the LifeMiles program didn’t allow redemptions in Lufthansa first class. That was probably quite intentional, given that Lufthansa has higher award ticket reimbursement rates in first class than many other carriers.

Fortunately that finally changed last November, when LifeMiles once again had access to Lufthansa first class award space.

As an update to this, I think it’s worth pointing out that LifeMiles doesn’t seem to have access to all Lufthansa first class award space anymore. At least they don’t show all the same space as Air Canada Aeroplan and United MileagePlus do, for example.

Great Deal: Buy Avianca LifeMiles With A 130% Bonus

ANA-First-Class

LifeMiles just launched their latest promotion on purchased miles, valid through September 30, 2016. However, they’re offering an “early bird bonus,” valid through September 10, 2016, which is the one you should take advantage of if you’re considering buying miles. This allows you to earn up to a 130% bonus on purchased miles, rather than just a 100% bonus.

For the “early bird bonus,” LifeMiles is offering:

— 2.05x miles if you purchase 2,000-50,000 miles (additional 5% bonus)
— 2.15x miles if you purchase 51,000-100,000 miles (additional 15% bonus)
— 2.3x miles if you purchase 101,000-150,000 miles (additional 30% bonus)

LifeMiles ordinarily cost 3.3 cents each to purchase, so if you purchase at least 101,000 miles during this promotion (pre-bonus) you can buy LifeMiles ~1.43 cents each, when factoring in the 130% bonus. For example, you can buy a total of 345,000 miles for $4,950:

LifeMiles Is Launching A New US Credit Card

LifeMiles-Credit-Card

Avianca’s LifeMiles program is popular for those looking to redeem miles for Star Alliance first & business class tickets. The program has reasonable redemption rates, no fuel surcharges, and frequently sells miles at a discount. It’s how I book most of my Star Alliance award tickets nowadays.

LifeMiles had a US credit card for a while, issued by US Bank, though it was recently announced that it was being discontinued. Existing cards would be converted into the US Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Card.

I’m not exactly sure what caused it to be discontinued. My guess is that the card didn’t gain much traction in the US market. There needs to be a unique vale proposition for a credit card co-branded with a non-US airline to be successful, and I think that was lacking with this card.

Interestingly it looks like LifeMiles will soon have a new US credit card, though the details are still sparse.

100% Bonus On Transferred LifeMiles

LifeMiles-Bonus

Avianca’s LifeMiles program has just announced that they’re offering a 100% bonus on transferred miles between July 12 and July 26, 2016. Obviously this is only useful if you have an existing LifeMiles mileage balance, since you can’t transfer miles you don’t have.

LifeMiles charges 1.5 cents per transferred mile, and you can transfer up to 75,000 miles per year (before the 100% bonus). In other words, transferring 75,000 miles would cost $1,125, and you’d receive a total of 150,000 miles in the account you transfer to. At a cost of 1.5 cents per generated mile, that’s not a half bad deal.

This used to be the best method to generate LifeMiles, given that with a 100% bonus the cost to transfer miles is 1.5 cents each, while the cost to purchase miles is 1.65 cents each (the costs used to be the same, but in 2014 LifeMiles raised the cost to purchase miles by 10%). However, lately we’ve seen LifeMiles offer several bonuses of more than 100% on purchased miles, including the following:

— This June LifeMiles offered up to a 135% bonus on purchased LifeMiles, which was an opportunity to generate miles for ~1.4 cents each
— Last December LifeMiles offered up to a 150% bonus on purchased miles, which was an opportunity to generate miles for ~1.32 cents each
— Last November LifeMiles offered up to a 140% bonus on purchased miles, which was an opportunity to generate miles for ~1.375 cents each

I Just Bought $3,333 Worth Of LifeMiles

Lufthansa-First-Class-747 - 1

First of all, a quick reminder that four opportunities to purchase points at a discount are ending today:

— Purchase Hilton HHonors points with up to a 100% bonus, bringing the cost down to 0.5 cents per point; see my post for analysis on this value
— Purchase IHG Rewards Club points with up to a 100% bonus, bringing the cost down to 0.575 cents per point; see my post for analysis on this value
— Purchase Starwood Preferred Guest points with up to a 35% discount, bringing the cost down to 2.275 cents per point; see my post for analysis on this value
— Purchase Avianca LifeMiles with up to a 135% bonus, bringing the cost down to ~1.4 cents per mile; see my post for analysis on this value

I didn’t end up buying Hilton points, since I have a decent balance of them, and don’t find the currency to offer outsized value, given that it’s the closest thing to a revenue based hotel loyalty program on the redemption side.

I also didn’t purchase IHG points, since the extent of my stays at IHG properties are my annual free night certificate that I get through the IHG Rewards Club Select Credit Card (which is an incredible value, but I don’t love the brand beyond that).

Delta And United Are Considering Buying Avianca

Avianca-787-Business-Class - 8

Consolidation has been the name of the game in the US airline industry for the past decade, and it seems to be the case whether airlines are doing well or whether they’re suffering. The US consolidation seems heavily centered around fully integrating airlines, where the airlines being taken over cease to exist.

Outside the US we’ve seen takeovers and direct investment occur more on the back-end, where airlines continue to operate independently, but as part of a larger company. For example, Iberia is part of IAG, which is also the parent company of British Airways.

Then you have airlines which have direct investment from other airlines. For example, Delta owns a big stake in Virgin Atlantic, Etihad owns a big stake in Alitalia, Hainan will soon own a big stake in Virgin Australia, etc.

Which brings us to the latest news about possible further consolidation and/or investment in the industry.

Even Better Offer: Buy LifeMiles With A *135%* Bonus!

Air-India-First-Class - 14

Since early May, Avianca’s LifeMiles program has been offering up to a 125% bonus on purchased miles. While the promotion was set to expire on May 31, 2016, it has been extended until June 3, 2016, as I wrote about last night.

A 125% bonus on purchased miles is a great deal, and presents an opportunity to purchase LifeMiles for as little as ~1.47 cents each. Well, as it turns out, there’s an opportunity to purchase them with an even better bonus, of up to 135%.

Per commenter George, you can receive a 135% bonus on purchased LifeMiles through Brazilian blog Passageiro de Primeira. This brings the cost per purchased mile down to ~1.4 cents.

To take advantage of this offer, register your LifeMiles number on this page.

Extended: 125% Bonus On Purchased LifeMiles

Avianca-787-Business-Class - 8

Since early May, Avianca’s LifeMiles program has been offering up to a 125% bonus on purchased miles. This is an opportunity to purchase LifeMiles for as little as 1.47 cents each, which represents a great opportunity to buy premium Star Alliance tickets at a discount, especially for travel in first class.

As I noted yesterday, the promotion was set to expire today, May 31, 2016. However, it has just been announced that Avianca’s 125% bonus on purchased miles is being extended through June 3, 2016.

So if you’ve been considering buying miles under this offer, you have another few days to pull the trigger. This is definitely a good deal under the right circumstances, though there are quite a few good offers on the purchase of points at the moment, including with Alaska, Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, and Starwood.
