LifeMiles Adjusts Award Rates To Australia & New Zealand

Thai-Airways-First-Class

Avianca’s LifeMiles program is one of my favorites for premium cabin Star Alliance redemptions, given that they frequently sell miles at a discount. LifeMiles had an award chart devaluation back in 2014, though hasn’t made many major changes to their Star Alliance partner chart since.

Frankly I think they’re at the sweet spot right now, and don’t see them making another big devaluation anytime soon. Following the last devaluation a few years ago we saw that they increased the percent bonus they offered on purchased miles, which suggests to me that demand dropped greatly following the devaluation, causing them to increase the bonuses offered.

However, some occasional minor adjustments in certain regions aren’t surprising, presumably based on data they have of peoples’ redemption patterns.

Avianca Brasil Is Adding Flights Between Miami & Sao Paulo As Of June 2017

Avianca-Brasil-A330-1

When it comes to Central and South America, there are two “powerhouse” airlines — Avianca and LATAM. Both airlines have hubs in several countries. One of Avianca’s quickly growing operations is Avianca Brasil, which is based in Brasil, as the name suggests.

Up until now the airline has primarily operated domestic flights, and they have a fleet of nearly 50 aircraft. However, over time they’re planning on adding longhaul routes, as they have a total of 16 A330s and A350s on order.

Avianca Brasil will be inaugurating their longhaul flights in a couple of months. As of June 23, 2017, Avianca Brasil will launch daily flights between Miami and Sao Paulo. The flights will operate with the following schedule, per @airlineroute:

I Just Bought 264,000 LifeMiles

ana-first-class-777-8

Through today, Avianca’s LifeMiles program is offering a special bonus on purchased miles. For readers of OMAAT, that bonus is up to 140%, which is an opportunity to acquire LifeMiles for as little as 1.375 cents each. The real out of pocket is even lower than that, given that buying LifeMiles typically qualifies as an airfare purchase, and therefore you can earn 3-5x points on some credit cards for your purchase.

The LifeMiles program isn’t perfect. There are certainly some downsides to the program, but I still find it to be one of the most practical programs for booking last minute premium cabin awards.

For example, last year I redeemed a few hundred thousand LifeMiles, including for travel in ANA first class, Lufthansa first class, etc. At a cost of 1.375 cents per mile, it’s tough to go wrong.

Last Chance: Register To Buy LifeMiles With A 140% Bonus

Asiana-A380-First-Class-001

As I first wrote about a week ago, Avianca’s LifeMiles program is offering a special bonus on purchased miles for readers of OMAAT. This bonus offers up to 15% more bonus miles than what LifeMiles is offering publicly. If you max out this promotion, this is potentially an opportunity to buy LifeMiles for ~1.375 cents each, which is an exceptional value.

Depending on which credit card you use to buy miles, it gets even better than that. The Platinum Card® from American Express offers 5x points on airfare, and anecdotally buying LifeMiles qualifies as airfare for the purposes of the card. I value those points at ~1.7 cents each, meaning you’re getting a return on spend of ~8.5%. If you’re going to instead view that value as a discount, that means you’re really paying ~1.25 cents per mile.

If you’re even considering taking advantage of this offer, today (Monday, February 27, 2017) is the last day to register. To register for the promotion, visit this page and enter your LifeMiles number.

LifeMiles Quadruples Award Ticket Cancelation Fees In Some Markets

lufthansa-748-first-class-4

I’m a big fan of the LifeMiles program for the great premium cabin Star Alliance award opportunities they open up. However, there’s no denying that the program has some quirks. Fortunately with a bit of planning, it’s possible to avoid some of the downsides of the program.

One of LifeMiles’ unusual policies is that historically they’ve charge $50 to cancel an itinerary, but $150 to change an itinerary. That’s the opposite of most airlines — most programs charge at least as much to cancel an award itinerary as they do to change one. But LifeMiles has historically charged three times as much to change an itinerary as to refund it.

Well, that’s no longer the case, and it looks like LifeMiles has recently changed the costs to redeposit award tickets in some regions.

ANA-First-Class

As I first wrote about last week, Avianca’s LifeMiles program is offering a 125-135% bonus on purchased miles. This is a fantastic opportunity to pick up miles that can be redeemed for first & business class tickets on Star Alliance airlines.

I’m happy to share that LifeMiles is offering a special increased bonus on purchased LifeMiles for readers of OMAAT. Readers can receive an additional bonus when buying LifeMiles over the next week, meaning you can earn up to a 140% bonus on purchased miles.

Here’s what the bonus chart looks like for OMAAT readers who register:

MORE Great Business Class Fares: LAX To Buenos Aires For $2,200

Aeromexico-787

It has been something of a big news day for relatively affordable roundtrip business class airfares to typically expensive destinations. Earlier today I posted about a fairly amazing ~$2,100 airfare from Los Angeles to Nairobi on SkyTeam carriers, and now I’m highlighting another good value fare that’s probably not going to be around too long.

I’m seeing business class roundtrips between Los Angeles and Buenos Aires starting at around $2,192, on both Aeromexico (with one stop in Mexico City, and the possibility of lie-flat equipped aircraft on both the LAX-MEX and MEX-EZE legs) and Avianca, with two stops in Bogota and Lima (and a lie-flat bed only on the LAX-BOG portion of the journey).

This in and of itself isn’t jaw-dropping — I’ve seen similar fares come and go — but what is great about this fare is that it’s valid through the end of schedule, meaning you can book trips to Argentina over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, when airfare is typically outrageous (and capacity typically limited).

Through this promotion, LifeMiles is offering up to a 125% bonus on purchased miles. This is a tiered offer, where you get a bigger bonus the more miles you buy, as follows:

LifeMiles Is Offering A 100% Bonus On Transferred Miles

ana-first-class-777-1

Avianca’s LifeMiles program has just announced that they’re offering a 100% bonus on transferred miles between February 1 and February 8, 2017. Obviously this is only useful if you have an existing LifeMiles mileage balance, since you can’t transfer miles you don’t have.

LifeMiles charges 1.5 cents per transferred mile, and you can transfer up to 75,000 miles per year (before the 100% bonus). In other words, transferring 75,000 miles would cost $1,125, and you’d receive a total of 150,000 miles in the account you transfer to. At a cost of 1.5 cents per generated mile, that’s not a half bad deal.

On the surface transferring miles with a 100% bonus is a good deal compared to the 100% bonus that LifeMiles often offers on purchased miles. That’s because with transfers you can generate LifeMiles for 1.5 cents each, while with buying miles you can generate them for 1.65 cents each.

Apply Now: LifeMiles Credit Card With 60,000 Bonus Miles

Avianca-787-Business-Class - 8

LifeMiles is the frequent flyer program of Avianca, and has generally been a pretty good program for Star Alliance premium cabin award redemptions. In July, LifeMiles announced that they’d introduce a new US credit card.

For a while LifeMiles had a credit card issued by US Bank, though it was discontinued. I assumed they’d be switching to an issuer like Bank of America or Barclaycard. Earlier this month LifeMiles sent out an email to members saying that the new card is just weeks away, and prompting them to register to receive a special sign-up bonus on the card.

Well, the new LifeMiles credit card is now “live,” so you can submit your application.
