How I’m Maximizing The 5x Transportation Bonus This Quarter

Tokyo-Freeway-002

I’ve had the Chase Freedom® Card for several years, since before I even started reading One Mile at a Time. It’s one of the two no-annual-fee cards I actually use (the other is The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card from American Express).

The 5% cash back the Freedom Card offers on rotating quarterly categories (up to $1,500 a quarter) is actually 5x Ultimate Rewards points for those of us who pair it with a card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.

This quarter (January through March), the bonus categories are gas stations and local commuter transportation. Gas stations often sell gift cards for future fuel purchases or other things, and many people meet the bonus that way.

How To Maximize Airline Miles With The SPG Amex Sign-Up Bonus

Emirates-A380-First-Class

At the moment we’re seeing the biggest ever sign-up bonuses on the SPG Amex. These cards are offering sign-up bonuses of up to 35,000 Starpoints each upon completing minimum spend.

Personally I value the flexibility of Starpoints, and it’s one of the few currencies I tend to hoard, since I think it’s pretty safe from devaluation. Starpoints can be redeemed efficiently for hotel stays, and can also be converted into airline miles efficiently.

Even the transfer ratio from Starwood Preferred Guest to Marriott Rewards is lucrative, as you can convert points at a 1:3 ratio. With that kind of a transfer ratio, arguably Marriott’s Hotel + Air packages are more lucrative than converting Starpoints directly into airline miles.

Everything You Need To Know About Sheraton Lounge Access With The SPG Business Amex

sheraton-grand-london-park-lane-29

At the moment we’re seeing very nice increased sign-up bonuses on both the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express and Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express. They’re offering sign-up bonuses of up to 35,000 Starpoints, which are the highest sign-up bonuses we’ve ever seen on these cards.

In my opinion both of these cards are worth acquiring for the sign-up bonuses and the return they offer on everyday spend. They also offer other ongoing perks, like free Boingo wifi, complimentary premium internet at Starwood properties, and two elite stay credits and five elite night credits towards status annually, which helps me requalify for Platinum status.

But there’s one benefit that really sets apart the business version of the card for anyone looking at applying. I know a lot of people are already familiar with this benefit, but even so, it’s a benefit I constantly get questions about.

New-Amex-Platinum-Card

Yesterday we learned about some major changes being made to the Amex Platinum Card as of March 30, 2017. The card will be seeing a $100 annual fee increase, from $450 to $550 per year. Of course there are some positive changes to offset that as well. Here’s how they’re described:

“Starting on March 30th, 2017, consumers with The Platinum Card will receive exclusive access in the Uber app to a new Uber Rides with Platinum benefit, which provides up to $200 annually in Uber credits for U.S. rides and automatic VIP status where available1. Amex EveryDay Preferred Card Vs. Blue Cash Preferred Card — Which Is Better?

Groceries-7

Reader Hello asked the following question on a recent post:

“Would anyone have advice on how to decide between this card (AMEX EveryDay Preferred) and the AMEX Blue Cash Preferred?”

It’s a great question. The Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card from American Express is one of the cards I most use for everyday spend, while the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express has an increased sign-up bonus, and is one of Amex’s most compelling cashback cards.

Review: Amex EveryDay Preferred Credit Card

Groceries-6

I’ve written about The Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card from American Express in a broader context several times, though in this post I wanted to talk specifically about this card, since I think it’s one of the best cards out there for the average American consumer looking to earn points. I’m always surprised by how many readers don’t have this card.

Here’s what you need to know about this card:

The card has a $95 annual fee, which isn’t waived the first year.

10 Best Credit Card Offers For February

st-regis-dubai-26

Every month I make a post with what I consider to be the best credit card sign-up bonuses of the month.

While there are several excellent long standing credit card offers, the specifics of the best offers are constantly changing (be it the annual fee, minimum spend requirement, or even amount of the sign-up bonus).

If you read my blog on a daily basis then by all means skip this post, but for me it’s a useful, “current” place to refer people who ask about which cards they should sign-up for, a question I get on a daily basis.

Why Marriott Loyalists Should Apply For The SPG Amex

ritz-carlton-bali

Through April 5, 2017, there’s an increased sign-up bonus on both the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express and Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express. Both cards are offering a sign-up bonus of up to 35,000 Starpoints upon completing minimum spend, with the $95 annual fee waived for the first year.

Over the years we’ve seen quite a few increased sign-up bonuses on the SPG Amex, though the bonus doesn’t get bigger than what’s being offered through this promotion. Furthermore, this year is a bit different than in the past, given that Marriott and Starwood have merged. Combined, the programs are estimated to have roughly 90 million members.

So there are a few reasons I think this offer may interest more people than ever before — especially Marriott Rewards loyalists:

Last Chance For A Great Increased Sign-Up Bonus

Singapore-Suites-1

For a couple of months now The Blue for Business® Credit Card from American Express has offered an excellent increased sign-up bonus. This is actually a card that wasn’t ever on my radar, though I recently uncovered just how rewarding it is, and applied for it myself.

Anyway, the card’s increased sign-up bonus expires tomorrow, February 22, 2017. So if you haven’t yet applied for this card, you really should consider doing so.

Why? First of all, the card offers a sign-up bonus of up to an incremental 64,600 Membership Rewards points. That comes in the following form:

7 Reasons To Get An SPG Amex Business Card

Through April 5, 2017, there’s an increased sign-up bonus on both the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express and Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express. Both cards are offering a sign-up bonus of up to 35,000 Starpoints upon completing minimum spend, with the $95 annual fee waived for the first year.

I know a lot of people have just the personal version and not the business version of this card, so in this post I wanted to look at some reasons to also consider the SPG Business Amex.

How To Know If You’re Eligible For The SPG Amex 35K Sign-Up Bonus

st-regis-dubai-26

At the moment we’re seeing the biggest ever sign-up bonuses on the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express and Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express. The cards are offering sign-up bonuses of 35,000 Starpoints upon completing minimum spend, which is the biggest bonuses the cards have ever offered.

35,000 might not sound like a big number, but keep in mind that Starpoints are the most valuable points currency out there, as far as I’m concerned. So those points are worth significantly more than 35,000 airline miles.

The bonus on each of these cards is “once in a lifetime,” though there’s some confusion about what that means in practice, so I figured I’d address that in this post.
