Air France/KLM

Here’s a Sneak Peek At FlyingBlue’s January Promo Awards

KLM-Business-Class-747-05

One of the best uses of Air France/KLM FlyingBlue miles is booking their Promo Awards.

FlyingBlue publishes these every month, and they offer 20-50% off select award tickets on Air France and KLM metal.

Back in the day Promo Awards would consistently be for 50% off and would have a good number of options in business class, though unfortunately they’ve devalued the promotion somewhat since then, and the discounts are now pretty consistently for 25% off. That’s still very good, just not as good.

The World’s Best First Class Lounge Is Closing For 5 Weeks

Air-France-First-Class-Lounge-Paris - 57

In the past I’ve ranked what I consider to be the world’s best first class lounges, and at the very top of that list is the Air France First Class Lounge Paris.

It’s not just the world’s best first class lounge (in my opinion), but also the world’s all around best first class ground experience. What makes it so great?

You’ll be picked up at your arriving flight, driven to the lounge, and then driven back to your connecting flight.

Fly Air France’s New 787 With Discounted Fares

air-france-787

As I wrote about a couple of weeks ago, Air France is the next airline to take delivery of the Boeing 787. To familiarize their crews with the plane, they’ll be flying it between London and Paris 6x weekly (every except Wednesday) between February 6 and March 25, 2017, with the following schedule:

AF1680 Paris to London departing 7:25AM arriving 7:45AM
AF1681 London to Paris departing 9:40AM arriving 11:55AM

Now, that’s a very short flight, so is hardly long enough to really experience the product. However, if you are an aviation geek and want to be among the first to fly the plane, Air France has just announced some special fares between the two airports on the 787.

Review: Air France Lounge New York JFK

air-france-lounge-new-york-jfk-30

We spent the weekend in the city (we stayed at the Andaz Wall Street, which I won’t be reviewing again). We got to JFK at around 9AM, plenty early for our 12:30PM flight from New York to Baku. Azerbaijan Airlines departs from JFK Airport Terminal 1, as do many other international airlines. I found it funny that Azerbaijan shared a sign with Meridiana, which is another airline I really want to try.

Azerbaijan’s check-in counter was surprisingly empty, though I guess we were arriving early. I’m used to Terminal 1 being super crowded, though in this case the terminal was almost deserted. That’s the benefit of flying earlier in the day, before most of the transatlantic flights depart.

The people working the Azerbaijan check-in desk were friendly, and processed our check-in pretty quickly. I was a bit surprised that they didn’t ask us if we had our visas. While Americans ordinarily need visas to visit Azerbaijan, there’s a special exception for passengers taking this flight. I was fully expecting they’d be unaware of this policy, so we had printed out all kinds of documentation, etc. Suffice to say I was very pleasantly surprised when they didn’t even ask about a visa.

Fly Across The English Channel In A Flat Bed

Air-France-Business-Class-777 - 1

At ~216 miles and ~40 minutes in the air, London to Paris isn’t exactly a very long flight. Nonetheless it’s a high frequency route for both Air France and British Airways, given what big markets both cities are.

The route is served almost exclusively by tight narrowbody aircraft, where business class is simply economy with a blocked middle seat.

Well, pretty soon there will be an opportunity to fly a special plane on the route, short as it may be.

Air France & KLM Will Finally Offer Inflight Wifi

Air-France-Business-Class-777 - 16

As I’ve explained before, inflight wifi is one of the amenities I value most on planes. Being able to stay connected with the world while flying around the world is pretty awesome, and I find that I always land more relaxed if I’ve been able to catch up on work and email on my flight, rather than landing to a big list of things to do.

Earlier in the year I flew Air France’s new business class from Paris to Toronto, and had a great flight. Air France is really investing in their premium product, with great new reverse herringbone seats in business class. As I concluded in my review:

“I just wish Air France had wifi on their planes. If they offered wifi on the planes with their new business class, it might just be my favorite transatlantic business class product.”

Air France Will Continue To Fly The Most Outdated A380s

Air-France-A380

Air France is in the process of refreshing their longhaul fleet, including introducing some great new first & business class seats.

Air France’s new first class seat must be one of the coolest new products out there. The product looks so clean and stylish. Rather than going for some fully enclosed suite, Air France instead has curtains around the seats, which is pretty awesome.

They also have some great new reverse herringbone seats in business class, which is a hard product that’s tough to beat.

The airline has been making good progress upgrading their 777s, which are the backbone of their longhaul fleet. Earlier this year Air France also announced that their A330s should get the new business class product starting late next year, and the project should be completed in 2018.

3 First Class Fares That *Almost* Tempt Me…

Air-France-First-Business-Class-43

As you guys know, my goal this year has been to review as many new airlines in premium cabins as possible, and I’ve found it to be immensely enjoyable. I’ve tried even more new products than I was hoping to, so a few weeks back I shared an additional list of 13 more airlines I want to review in the coming months.

I’ve shared the details of my upcoming trips, and as you may have noticed, my emphasis this year has been on business class products rather than first class products. That’s for a couple of reasons:

— With recent award chart devaluations, first class awards are in many cases now disproportionately expensive, while the cost of business class awards is still reasonable, so the “sweet spot” for redemptions is starting to shift
— For most business travelers, business class reviews are more useful than first class reviews, since most people can’t justify booking first class

Is There No Good Way To Get To Tahiti On Miles Anymore?

Air-Tahiti-Nui-Business-Class

As much as I suck at relaxing, I do love traveling to relaxing destinations. Having a beautiful place from which to work is my definition of relaxing, so I’d like to think I appreciate an overwater villa in the Maldives as much as the next person.

While I’ve been to the Maldives a couple of times, I’ve never made it to Tahiti (or more specifically, Bora Bora). That’s unfortunate, given that it’s actually much closer to the US, and only about an eight hour flight from LA.

Starwood recently announced their annual 35% off sale for resort points redemptions, and one property in particular caught my eye — the St. Regis Bora Bora. The hotel is available for 39,000 Starpoints per night, and with a fifth night free it would cost an average of 31,200 Starpoints per night.

That’s still a lot of Starpoints, but it seems like a great motivator to finally check out Bora Bora, given how stunning it looks in pictures.

KLM Is Now Serving Heineken Beer On Tap

KLM-Beer

A couple of months back, KLM announced that they’d be introducing Heineken beer straight from the tap on select KLM flights. That’s right, there’s a special Heineken trolley that flight attendants use to dispense the beer. While I’m not a beer drinker (and I know a lot of people don’t like Heineken), the concept looks awesome, and oh-so-Dutch.

While this concept was announced a couple of months ago, the first flight with beer on tap was just completed. That’s because the regulatory approval delayed the introduction of this offering. Unfortunately they only have one trolley so far, so there’s no way to predict which flight will offer beer on tap. Furthermore, this service is limited to business class passengers.

Here’s how KLM describes the offering on their blog:
