Hello from Hong Kong! Tiffany and I are traveling around Asia for a week. We were supposed to go to Australia, but for a variety of reasons decided against it (the primary reason being that we would have been in Australia for all of a day — oops). We’ve had a great time, though unfortunately I came down with a cold a couple of days ago, and now feel awful. I seem to have especially bad luck when traveling with Tiffany!

On the points and travel front, Hyatt announced the details of their first global promotion of 2018, we learned about rumored changes coming to the Amex Platinum Card, Emirates revealed their next destination to feature their new first class, and more.

With that out of the way, here’s a recap of this week on the blog:

Flying Qatar Airways Qsuites From New York To Doha

My last trip report finished off with a TAP Air Portugal flight from Lisbon to Newark. That same day I flew from from New York JFK to Doha. I made my way to JFK, and then spent some time in the Flagship Lounge (or more specifically, the Flagship Bridge) prior to my flight.

My flight was departing from gate 16, which is one of the closest gates to the security checkpoint and Flagship Lounge, and boarding was scheduled for 8:20PM, which is 45 minutes before departure. I headed to the gate at around 8PM.

Seeking: Savvy Miles & Points Enthusiast To Write For OMAAT

We have some amazing friends who have contributed to the blog over the years, and have learned a great deal during that time. Our ideas on what works, what doesn’t, and the best ways to supplement what Ben is already writing have evolved, and we’ve tried to factor in the feedback from readers as well.

We’re ready to add a contributor under a more formal arrangement, and would like to open up the opportunity to readers, and not just people we know personally.

We will be accepting applications until February 28th at 11:59PM Eastern, read on for more.

Helping A Reader Optimize Their Credit Card Strategy

A lot of people post in the Ask Lucky forum asking for guidance to help maximize their credit card rewards. User lbs57 asked about having overlapping cards a few days ago.

While this is a specific question, I think a surprising number of people find themselves in similar situations. They spend a lot on their credit cards, but they’re not getting all that much out of their rewards. What I like about the above situation is that it’s quite easy to point at some easy opportunities for improvement.

To make this easy, let me give a few specific suggestions of how the above credit card strategy could be greatly improved:

Get well Lucky. Just would like to point out the photo you used is not one of Hong Kong. There is nothing that looks like that in HK, but the biggest giveaway is that HK drives on the left, while cars in this picture drive on the right.

I can't quite figure out which part of Hong Kong the cover picture of this post is taken from. Given the open space, my guess is that it's somewhere in the New Territories?

    Get well soon Lucky!

Great view from Park Hyatt BKK. We had a suite there for 5 Days a few weeks back when I was sick.

    New favorite in Bangkok!

Great post, I would love to go to Hong Kong, I look forward to your updates and travels. As for Amex, I find the benefits are great however not many people accept it.

I am surmised your not Ill more really.
Air travel puts you in an incubator on Long haul flights, adds lots of folks from all over the world with their disease process at various stages ( some viruses and bacterium you have never seen before ever and your immune system is going- What?).
Add air that’s through an engine( except on the wonderful Dreamliner and perhaps some newer designs)

A dash of stress, and odd food at odd times.
Sprinkle liberally with time zone disruption to sleep.
Voilà - the lurgy as it’s called in Scotland.
I am sure your vaccinations are up to date, but not only time zones are a side effect of geography- epididimologicaly you are visiting various places where seasonal flu, colds, mass migration patterns of holidaymakers( all of China has just moved round the country, continent and world and its cold there now- colds and flu) all move illness vast distances and a lot of it in aircraft.
Keep that the immune system good, sleep, eat well and hydrate.
I used to consult at various remote clinics in Eastern Europe and Asia and all that travel was challenging but like I suspect lucky I had an immune system eventually that was Popeyes on concentrated spinach. 30 plus Years in various clinical roles also helped develop it( as a trainee doc or nurse you are sick the first year, better second and pretty strong the third.)
Just coming out of a wave of flu in Singapore now- we get at least two here a year- the northern and southern waves- the joy of being at the Crossroads.

Oh great make Tiffany out to be the black cloud

    1. Tiffany OMAAT

@ Pete -- Hah! I like to think it's because it's "safe" for him to fall ill while traveling with me ;) There's no itinerary pressure, or any responsibility to manage the travel situation, and should it come down to it there's probably something in my bag to help.

Or he might be allergic to me, also a possibility!
