Earn 10x Points At Best Buy & Walmart With Chase Pay

At the moment there are a couple of very nice promotions for those making purchases at Best Buy or Walmart with a Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Freedom Unlimited, or Chase Freedom (unfortunately the Chase Sapphire Preferred is excluded). This promotion is valid as long as you use Chase Pay to complete your purchase (I’m talking specifically about the Chase Pay mobile wallet payment option, rather than just paying with a Chase card).

Let’s look at the details of the two promotions:

Earn 10x points at Best Buy

The Best Buy promotion is valid for up to $400 in purchases through December 24, 2017. You’ll earn a total of 10x points per dollar spent, which includes the points you usually earn (meaning you’re earning an extra 8.5-9x points per dollar spent).

There’s no registration required, but rather you should earn the bonus points automatically, within a week of the transaction posting. Best I can tell you should be able to earn this bonus on each of the three cards.

This is only valid for in-store purchases, meaning you need to download the Chase Pay app and use it when checking out in person.

Earn 10x points at Walmart

The Walmart promotion is valid for up to $325 in purchases through December 14, 2017. You’ll earn a total of 10x points per dollar spent, which includes the points you usually earn.

There’s no registration required, but rather you should earn the bonus points automatically, within a week of the transaction posting. Best I can tell you should be able to earn this bonus on each of the three cards.

This promotion is valid both at walmart.com and in-store, so you have more flexibility with this offer.

The Chase Freedom is already offering 5x points on the first $1,500 of spend at Walmart and select department stores this quarter, so in reality using the Chase Freedom through this offer will only yield you an additional 5x points, for a total of 10x points per dollar spent.

Walmart’s website sells all kinds of gift cards (including Uber, which they’re offering a 10% discount on at the moment), so that could be a good way to take advantage of the promotion. However, Walmart is also known for canceling gift card orders, so there’s no guarantee that will work. Still, it could be an interesting way to take advantage of this promotion. There was a similar promotion for Walmart purchases with Chase Pay earlier this year, so see that post for a step-by-step tutorial of how this works.

Bottom line

I value Ultimate Rewards points at ~1.7 cents each, so to me this is like getting a ~17% return on purchases with both Best Buy and Walmart. If you’re thinking of making a purchase with either retailer, this could represent a great deal.

Comments

  1. @ Michael — Unfortunately not. In the case of the Chase Freedom you’re still earning a total of 10x points per dollar spent, meaning you’re earning 5x points through the fourth quarter promotion, and 5x points through this promotion.

  2. A tip for those who have both business and personal cards under the same logon (I imagine there are quite a few, given the popularity of the Ink cards) – you won’t be able to use Chase Pay until you separate out business and personal cards into their own logons, and use the personal logon for the Chase Pay. You have to call into Chase for this.

  3. Also confirmed with Chase reps that both the Walmart.com and Best Buy offers are NOT targeted, they are available to all holders of the qualifying cards. The rep also confirmed that the terms and conditions specifically exclude Walmart stores (I’m not sure whether Chase Pay works in their stores), so only purchases on the website qualify.

  4. I keep getting an error. At first it was afer the Chase Pay bit, the Walmart screen would give me some sort of error in processing, and now when I select Chase Pay, I get a Chase pop up that says that there is a system error.

    Grr.

  5. Anyone had any luck getting this to work in-store at Walmart? My local Walmart is convinced this is online only…

  6. @Pete: “Anyone had any luck getting this to work in-store at Walmart? My local Walmart is convinced this is online only…”

I believe that it is online only, despite what Lucky wrote here – the prior comments here as well as the offer on walmart.com both indicate online only.

  7. “There’s no registration required” – Thanks for including this simple line. I’m about to make a purchase and just needed to go back and scan one of these stories to make sure I had all my ducks in a row. Good work!

  8. Do we know if you can use the BestBuy and Walmart promotions on the same card, for double basically?

Also If I wanted to do the Walmart one can I do it on all 3 Chase Cards (CFU,CF,CSR?) for a total of $975

  9. Is the Walmart promotion with Chase Pay per card (i.e. if you have Freedom & Sapphire could be $325 x 2) or only 1 per customer ?
