New TSA Pre-Check Airlines: ANA, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, And Korean Air

The two innovations of the past several years that have made the US travel experience substantially more pleasant have been TSA Pre-Check and Global Entry. As a reminder, TSA Pre-Check allows eligible travelers expedited security screening, where they don’t have to take off their shoes, or take their liquids or laptops out of their bags.

Meanwhile Global Entry allows for expedited customs & immigration, where eligible travelers can just use kiosks at immigration, rather than having to queue for an agent.

While Global Entry is valid regardless of which airline you’re flying, TSA Pre-Check requires flying certain airlines that are enrolled in the program.

Over the past couple of years the TSA has nicely expanded the number of airlines that participate in Pre-Check. For example, last year the TSA added Aeromexico, Etihad, and Lufthansa to the programamong other airlines. Earlier this year the TSA added another 11 airlines to the program.

Five more airlines are now Pre-Check eligible

The TSA has announced that a further five airlines are now eligible for TSA Pre-Check. Specifically, All Nippon Airways, Cathay Pacific, Contour Aviation, Finnair, and Korean Air passengers are now eligible for TSA Pre-Check (am I the only one who had never heard of Contour?).

At this point passengers on the following 42 airlines are eligible for TSA Pre-Check:

Aeromexico, Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Aruba Airlines, Avianca, Boutique Airlines, Cape Air, Cathay Pacific Airways, Contour Aviation, Copa Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Dominican Wings, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Finnair, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, InterCaribbean Airways, JetBlue Airways, Key Lime Air, Korean Air, Lufthansa, Miami Air International, OneJet, Seaborne Airlines, Silver Airways, Singapore Airlines, Southern Airways Express, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, Sunwing Airlines, Swift Air, Turkish Airlines, United Airlines, Virgin America, Virgin Atlantic, WestJet, Xtra Airways

To be eligible for Pre-Check, always make sure you enter your Known Traveler Number at the time of booking. While there’s a chance you’ll get Pre-Check without entering your Known Traveler Number, the only way to get Pre-Check reliably is when you enter that number so you should now be able to update bookings on the above airline to add it (otherwise just provide it at check-in).

Registering for TSA Pre-Check

While you can pay to register for TSA Pre-Check directly, you’re much better off registering for Global Entry, as it also comes with TSA Pre-Check (TSA Pre-Check, on the other hand, doesn’t come with Global Entry).

I registered for Global Entry for the first time in mid-2011, and wrote about my experience at the time. Global Entry is valid for five years, and I renewed my membership just last year.

The very best way to get TSA Pre-Check is through NEXUS, which costs just $50 and gets you expedited immigration in the US and Canada, Global Entry, and TSA Pre-Check. You pay half the price and get the most privileges. But that’s not as practical for everyone, since there aren’t as many centers where you can enroll for NEXUS, since it’s primarily intended for those traveling frequently between the US and Canada.

Bottom line

It’s great to see more airlines joining Pre-Check, as it really can be a huge timesaver. I’m especially excited about four of the airlines being added. For Cathay Pacific and Korean Air I specifically have memories of waiting in line waiting to clear security wishing that I had Pre-Check.

  1. Bummer, was hoping EVA Air would be included in that list. Flying them in a few weeks and it would definitely be handy to have TSA Pre!

  2. Pen Air! I couldn’t use Precheck at PDX because they’re not approved. Luckily it wasn’t a bad line, but I suppose most fliers of theirs are at smaller airports where TSA Pre wouldn’t make one lick of difference other than not taking a laptop out of a bag.

  3. Can someone help me understand… in USA it is possible to pay to go trough passport control faster?

    In Germany for example there are selfservice gates for this and anyone from EU with biometric passport is free to use it.

    I am always reading about dreadful immigration lines in US and it seems ti me that someone is getting good money for this Global Entry. Is it a goverment or is it a private company?

  5. Pointless for LA passengers unfortunately. Hopefully they will add a TSA precheck line to Tom Bradley terminal at somepoint.

  6. Global Entry/ CBP has a new website, you need to create a new login and then attach your membership # to it. It’s a well-guided process but takes a few minutes plus an email and text verification.

  7. Lucky, I am TSA Pre-check. I will be flying CX on Nov 30 (MLE-HKG in J) and on Dec 1, HKG-JFK (also in J). Do I want to add my KTN to CX’s PNR for faster check in at MLE and HKG respoectively? wouldn’t my J ticket get me thru faster lanes at those airports?

  9. Flying ANA in 4 hours. Was able to add known traveler info for me and my companion already. Sweet! Now let’s see if it shows on the boarding pass.

  11. Qatar where are you at in the list??? Oh wait you are not in there (?) Akbar less talking and more action PLEASE!! Emirates and Eithad was already in the list. You are losing SOOOO behind in this!!! Don’t spend your time planning your speech out and get your TSA Precheck(!)

  12. @Thomas – Global Entry is a CBP program (government). The money probably goes towards keeping the program running, but who knows. Based on the context of your comment, I assume you are a German citizen, in which case you should be eligible to join Global Entry. Its not as easy as the biometric entry you guys have, but its still very very quick. You’re through as fast as you can scan your fingerprints and answer 5 yes or no questions.

    Google Global Entry for German Citizens and the steps you need to take to get it are clearly listed on the CBP website.

    There is still some use, since now if you have Precheck and have a Cathay Pacific boarding pass, you can go in through Terminal 4 and then walk over to TBIT. Obviously would be great to finally have Precheck added to TBIT itself, but this could be a solution in the meantime.

Love the program — but am starting to take issue with the amount of people that get Pre-Check added for free based on other factors (I know a few people that had it added to their boarding ticket at no cost / no vetting). The TSA Pre-check lines can be pretty long. It is often obvious that a great number in the line didn’t pay/go through the vetting process, as they have no clue on how to go through a TSA Pre-Check line.

  15. @RC: There is a PreCheck facility in the Bradley Terminal at LAX. It is downstairs in the arrivals area for connecting passengers. You don’t need to schlep over to T4.

    @Pete: Used to be that way, but TSA is now pretty much limiting it to those signed-up for PreCheck or Global Entry. Problem is that a whole lot more people have signed up (and obviously don’t use it much since they are clueless in the queue).

  16. The PreCheck area at LAX Bradley must have moved. It is no longer downstairs in the connections area.

    I assume this is due to the number of airlines flying out of the Bradley Terminal that are PreCheck approved.

    Not sure where it is now. I couldn’t see it on the South end of security so must assume it is on the North side now.
