Online shopping portals can be a great way to pick up additional miles & points for purchases you’d make anyway. Just for following a specific link you can earn bonus points in addition to the ones you’d earn anyway for credit card spend. Whenever I make an online purchase I always check to see which shopping portal has the best bonus.
At the moment there’s an opportunity to stack two bonuses to get a really great return on some purchases. As noted by Frequent Miler, at the moment the Chase shopping portal is offering 10x points on Macy’s purchases. I value Ultimate Rewards points at ~1.7 cents each, so to me that’s like getting a return of ~17% on those purchases.
You can access the portal by logging into your Chase account, and then clicking on the “Earn Points” tab at the top, and then clicking on “Shop through Chase.”
But it gets better than that. Keep in mind that in the fourth quarter, the Chase Freedom is offering 5x points for spend at department stores and Walmart. Macy’s is one of the qualifying department stores. Keep in mind that the 5x points category is for the first $1,500 of cumulative spend in the quarter.
That means if you make a Macy’s purchase through the Chase shopping portal using the Chase Freedom at the moment you’d earn 15x points. Assuming you have the ability to convert those into Ultimate Rewards points, that’s like a return of 25%+ on Macy’s spend.
While the Chase Freedom is a cashback card offering one cent cashback per point, those points can be converted into Ultimate Rewards points. That’s possible as long as you have the card in addition to one of the cards that accrues Ultimate Rewards points, which include the following:
So the cumulative 15% cashback converts into 15x Ultimate Rewards points.
In terms of the shopping portal bonus, the following restrictions apply:
Not eligible on purchases made through adjustments, reorders and corporate gift cards. Not eligible on Apple products, mattresses, furniture. Not eligible on sales from partner sites that have their product listings linked to Macys.com. Any return, exchange or other adjustment made at a physical store location for an on-line purchase may result in your purchase being deemed ineligible. Not eligible on returns, taxes, shipping, handling, gift wrapping and other service charges. Not eligible on purchases made with coupon or discount codes that are not found on this site. Not eligible on gift cards, gift certificates or any other similar cash equivalents.
Even if you’re not a regular Macy’s shopper, keep in mind that department stores typically have fixed pricing on skincare, perfume, etc., so this can be a great way to score a discount on a product you often use. If you can earn rewards equivalent to 25% on things you’d buy anyway, you absolutely should.
Does anyone plan on taking advantage of this opportunity to earn 15x points on Macy’s purchases?
