Limited Time: Airberlin Topbonus Allowing Award Bookings On Etihad

As we all know by now, airberlin is ceasing operations on October 28. Other than their employees, the greatest impact will obviously be on their frequent flyers, and I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be to have a bunch of airberlin miles stored that can’t be used.

Well, through November 17, topbonus is allowing members to use their miles for award bookings on Etihad. They’re even offering reduced redemption rates as follows:

Redeem your miles and fly with Etihad Airways from Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, and Munich or Zurich and Geneva to heavenly travel destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Asia or Australia. Benefit now from the reduced mile offers:

  • For 25,000 miles you can fly to the Gulf states, to South and Central Asia
  • For 30,000 miles you can fly to Africa and the Middle East
  • For 35,000 miles you can fly to South East Asia and the Far East
  • For 50,000 miles you can fly to Australia

The prices listed above are for economy class, and redemptions in business and first class aren’t possible. If you have any topbonus miles left, this is probably the best chance you’ll have to get decent value from them, since the only other real option is to use miles in their “pop-up shop.” Note that you need to travel between October 19, 2017 and March 28, 2018.

To book you’ll need to contact the topbonus service center at +49 69 15 32 53 484 during central European office hours.

I hope some you of find value from this!

  1. quote: “redemptions in business and first class aren’t possible”

=> redemptions in first class were _never_ possible with topbonus miles, even when the program still properly existed

Still sitting on 650k tb miles 🙁

  2. @Debit:

Accumumalated over the years, mostly through flying / generous promos (never had their credit card). Was planning to use them for some nice OW awards eventually, but never got around to do it until it was too late.

I think the only redemption I ever made was for an upgrade DUS-JFK for a friend earlier this year.

  3. Speaking with the TB contact center has always been a nightmare to say the least. I tried several times in the last two years calling them to get business class upgrades with my miles and waited more than 30 minutes (on international call from Italy) listening to their music, without getting any answer. In the end I was so frustrated by their complete lack of service that I “had” to switch to Lufthansa as my preferred airline for traveling long haul. Worst customer care ever…

  4. @David – it’s not like you didn’t have any warning AB was going under – why didn’t you use them earlier??

  5. The first line of the topbonus announcement says: “We are pleased to inform you that from now on you will be able to book award flights again.” and a little further down “Benefit now from the reduced mile offers” with the list of available redemptions and the cut-off dates for the booking period. I assumed that it meant the reduced milage offer is for a limited period, but that it would still be possible to book award tickets at the “normal” rate after this promotion, am I wrong?

On the other hand, I don’t have much faith left in topbonus so I’m not assuming it will all be good and dandy from now on and forever, I’ll probably try to get rid off my 300k tp miles asap.

Also, be sure to read the fine print (Terms & Conditions)…
    i.e.
-Award tickets are only available exclusive of taxes, fares and surcharges – this means all taxes, fares and surcharges need to be paid by the topbonus member.
    …and…
-The status benefit “lounge access” is not valid for topbonus members on Etihad award flights. All other topbonus status benefits for Etihad flights are valid on Etihad award flights.
