Last Chance: Citi ThankYou Premier 50K Sign-Up Bonus

Update: This offer for the Citi ThankYou® Premier Card is expired. Learn more about the current offer here.

Since mid-July, the Citi ThankYou® Premier Card has been offering an increased sign-up bonus of 50,000 ThankYou points upon completing minimum spend ($4,000 within three months of account opening), which is the biggest public bonus we’ve seen on the card in a long time. Prior to that the sign-up bonus was 30,000 points upon completing minimum spend.

If you’ve been considering this offer but haven’t yet applied, I’d recommend doing so ASAP, as the details of the offer are expected to change this coming Tuesday, August 22. We don’t know what exactly will change, but I’d guess the sign-up bonus will likely be decreasing.

The Citi ThankYou Premier Card is an incredibly compelling mid-range card. It has a $95 annual fee, which is waived for the first 12 months. It’s also the most rewarding Citi card for everyday spend, as it offers:

  • 3x points on travel, including gas stations
  • 2x points on dining & entertainment
  • 1x points on all other purchases

Those are well rounded bonus categories. Keep in mind that the card offers 3x points on travel purchases including gas, unlike most other cards, which won’t include “gas” in the travel category. Without accounting for the fact that I value ThankYou points slightly less than Membership Rewards or Ultimate Rewards points, those are the most well rounded bonus categories for a mid-range card.

Points earned on the Citi ThankYou Premier Card can be redeemed for airfare at the rate of 1.25 cents per point (making 50,000 points worth $625), or alternatively can be transferred to the ThankYou hotel and airline partners.

If you haven’t yet applied for the Citi ThankYou Premier Card, I’d seriously consider doing so by Monday, as this offer is likely to change after that.

Comments

  1. Can I transfer thank you points earned on the Prestige to this Premier card? I’m considering getting rid of the prestige in favor of the Chase Sapphire Reserve, but I don’t want to lose the 100k thank you points I’ve accumulated. Any insights are appreciated.

  2. This bit from the application website kind of spooked me:

“Bonus ThankYou Points are not available if you have had a ThankYou Preferred, ThankYou Premier or Citi Prestige card opened or closed in the past 24 months.”

(Not true for me, but I’m afraid of a better bonus coming up in the next couple of years and not being able to take advantage of it.)

Secondly, does anyone know if I can take advantage of this (or any other credit card offer) as a U.S. citizen living abroad?

  3. @Lucky
Unrelated to the article, but I took Garuda the other day and in their magazine they stated that they reconfigured at least one, perhaps more (it’s not immediately clear from the article), of their 3-class 777-300ER to the 2-class variant for the Hajj season, which could be one of the reasons why Tokyo is losing the 3-class 300ER, as well as Amsterdam: not in preparation for the LAX service as you suggested.

  4. @Tim you can transfer it, but once the original card that created the TYP is canceled, you have a limited window of expiration- I believe it’s 60 days. This is regardless of whether you keep another TYP card open or not.

  5. Oh well. My current premier card hits two years old next month. Guess I won’t be reapping nor keeping the prestige open so i can reapp. Im closing a ton of citicards and waiting two years.

  6. Thanks for the heads up. I used your link to apply, and was approved this morning.

I already have the CSR and Amex Plat so I didn’t really want the Prestige. I’m happy to get this card; it will become my primary card for gas purchases.

  7. I was thinking of getting a low fee, points transfer card since I don’t plan on being loyal to an airline in 2018. Do you all (Ben and OMAAT readers) consider this one to be the best? How is this compared to the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card?

  8. @Will Conway
The bonus for TY Prestige has been higher in the past, highest has been 60,000 points. However, it is very unlikely that they will go back to 60,000 points. Data points suggest 50,000 points is as good as it is going to get at this time. Usual signup bonus is 40,000 points. Get it while you can.
