Amex Is Offering A 40% Bonus On Points Transfers To British Airways

In the interest of full disclosure, One Mile At A Time earns a referral bonus for anyone that’s approved through some of the below links. These are the best publicly available offers that we have found for each card. Please check out our advertiser policy for further details about the partners we work with. Thanks for your support!

American Express Membership Rewards is offering a 40% bonus on points transfers to British Airways Executive Club through September 17, 2017. This is a fantastic offer, especially as it’s available for a full two months.

The bonus is hard coded into the transfer ratio, meaning that there’s no limit to how many points you can transfer, and the bonus should post instantly (transfers between Membership Rewards and British Airways are also typically instant). During the promotion period, 1,000 Amex Membership Rewards points will convert into 1,400 British Airways Avios.

Keep in mind that up until last week, Membership Rewards points only converted into Avios at a 1,000:800 ratio, at which point that was finally changed to a 1:1 ratio. So this added 40% bonus is awesome, as it means that transfers to British Airways this week net you 75% more Avios than transfers prior to last week.

British Airways has a distance based award chart, where the cost of an award is based on the distance of each individual segment that you fly. Here’s the chart, which has both peak and off-peak per segment pricing (travel on partner airlines will always be at the peak level):

As you can see, redeeming Avios for shorthaul travel can be an excellent value, whether you’re talking about travel within Europe, North America, Asia, Australia, etc.

Do keep in mind that there are often carrier imposed surcharges, though, but they’re not charged for travel on all airlines. You can minimize these by redeeming on Aer Lingus, airberlin, LATAM, etc.

This is a great way to use points earned on cards like The Platinum Card® from American ExpressThe Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPENPremier Rewards Gold Card from American ExpressThe Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN, etc.

Do you plan on taking advantage of the 40% bonus on points transfers from Amex to British Airways?

  1. Ahh wish I knew about this last night. Any idea if Amex will honor promo for transfers made to BA literally last night?

  2. My dear Jackie – I sincerely doubt BA would EVER be banned from the EU!

Lucky – does this offer only apply to US based residents? (I’m a UK resident…)

  3. Well I also think it is unlikely, but given how things are going recently, you never know…

  4. Same as @James, when I did a big transfer (175k MR) 5 years ago BA announced an award chart devaluation after that big promo. I’m still have over 100k left but I use it for direct flight from USA to South America with points + cash. On some cases is the best option.

  5. Redeeming Avios is probably the best way to book short trips from NYC to BOS or DCA. It’s almost worth it to collect Avios purely for that purpose. Just booked a quick overnight trip to DC for 15,000 miles round trip when airlines were asking for $340 and Amtrak was asking for $370+.

  6. Is there an expression date on the points once they’ve been transferred. I have over 7m points and don’t have much experience with redemption.

  7. Is there an expiration date on the points once they’ve been transfered to BA. I have over 7M points and not a lot of experience in points redemption.

  8. Lucky: I think your award chart is wrong. DFW to SAT is about 300 miles, but BA charges 7500 each way. If I recall, I think they did away with Zone 1, merging it into Zone 2.

  9. 1. 4,500 Avios economy one-way flights will be going to 7,500 Avios
    2. 9,000 Avios business one-way flights will be going to 15,000 Avios
    3. 18,000 Avios first class one-way flights will be going to 30,000 Avios

    This change happened Feb 2016.

  10. Can I transfer my AMEX MR points to someone else’s BA account?

I think it used to be okay for spouse and authorized users but not sure if AMEX has changed their terms recently. Most google search results contain dated information.

  11. I intend to make a transfer, not so much for BA travel, but to use on Iberia, which, unlike BA, consistently has business class availability on direct routes from Miami.

  12. Wanting to take advantage of the AmEx bonus and move BA Avios over to IB. Is anyone else getting the error message, “Sorry, you are not eligible to combine your Avios.” Seems to be a known intermittent error known on FlyerTalk.

  13. @Allison S AFAIR in order to move your Avios from BA to IB your IB account must have at least 1 point and must be older than 90 days.

  14. I’ve had 100 Avios points in Iberia for quite some time. Does anyone know how to check expiration of these points? Also will a small transfer in/out using BA AVOIS extend the life of these points? I have tons of SPG Points which I be been waiting for a transfer opportunity like this- maybe we’ll see something from SPG soon?

  15. lucky, love your blog, been really enjoying it befoer my first business travel.

I live in Canada and I called AmEx Canada and they had no idea about this promo, well even worse, they told me it is expired. I’m waiting on a manager call back but Amex gold customer service in Canada has really gone down hill.

Any comments if this is valid for us maple syrup hockey loving flyers?

  16. is this just a US thing? not a single mention of this promotion on my amex account (canada). how annoying and disappointing 🙁

  17. I am not sure how short haul Avios redemptions on BA metal are a good value. I am trying to book OSL-LHR-OSL using Avios for a family of 3 in August and I am being quoted 45,000 Avios PLUS $1100 in taxes! I can buy a commercial booking on BA for these segments for the same cost.
